The world of police dramas on TV is still thriving, and Prime Video has officially renewed Ballard for a second season. This news was expected, as Ballard quickly became one of Prime Video’s most popular and critically praised shows. The first season ended with a major cliffhanger, and fans have been eager to learn what happens next. The finale also hinted at a larger role for a familiar face from the Bosch universe – Honey Chandler – in the upcoming season.
Honey Chandler started as an opposing lawyer to Harry Bosch in the first season of Bosch, but they later began working together. She became increasingly important in Bosch and eventually became a central character in Bosch: Legacy. Though she was a key figure in Bosch: Legacy and several characters crossed over to Ballard, Honey Chandler only made a brief appearance in the first season finale of Ballard. Now that Season 2 of Ballard is confirmed, there’s a good chance Honey Chandler could return in a larger role, which would be a welcome development considering the show’s dramatic ending.
Honey Chandler Earned Her Place in the Bosch TV Universe
Honey Chandler first appeared in the very first episode of Bosch Season 1. She was the lawyer representing the family suing Harry Bosch for the death of a suspect he’d killed. Their relationship started off rocky; Bosch initially distrusted her, believing she was only interested in winning a big payout from the city, which led him to call her “Money” Chandler.
As the Bosch series progressed, the relationship between Harry Bosch and Honey Chandler improved, beginning in Season 4. That season, Honey becomes entangled in the murder of Howard Elias, a well-known civil rights lawyer. Elias was deeply involved in a major case accusing the LAPD of using excessive force on a suspect. The suspect was later proven innocent but suffered serious and lasting injuries during the interrogation.
With Elias working on a sensitive case involving misconduct within the LAPD, Harry needed to investigate his murder and determine if Elias’s accusations of abuse of power and excessive force were true. To do this, Harry tasked Honey Chandler with reviewing Elias’s files and evidence, helping her identify what information could be used in the investigation.
Harry uncovers video footage showing LAPD detectives using excessive force against his client, Elias. He surprisingly decides to give the footage to Elias, allowing him to pursue legal action against the police department. This act surprises Chandler, who expected Harry to protect his fellow officers, as the LAPD typically covers for its own. This gesture dramatically shifts Chandler’s view of Harry, leading them to collaborate again in Season 5.
Chandler and Bosch Have a Better Relationship After Bosch Season 5
In accuses Harry of fabricating the evidence that led to Borders’ arrest and conviction. Harry enlists Honey Chandler to defend him, and they develop a strong working relationship and mutual respect as they try to prove Borders is lying. Meanwhile, Harry’s daughter, Maddie, an intern at the District Attorney’s office, bravely risks her career by secretly photographing files related to her father’s case and sending them to Honey Chandler.
Following a series of events, Maddie leaves her internship to work for Honey Chandler instead. In Season 7 of Bosch, Honey Chandler is attacked at home and nearly killed. This happens after she begins investigating Carl Rogers, a powerful financier who hires someone to eliminate both a witness and Honey herself.
Maddie, still partnered with Honey, discovers the body and alerts the police. Harry quickly understands that Maddie is also at risk, because she was the only one besides Honey who knew the contents of the murdered witness’s video testimony. This sets off a frantic effort to get Maddie to testify before a grand jury before Carl Rogers silences her. The story with Carl Rogers continues in Bosch: Legacy, deepening the bond between Harry and Honey as they strive to bring him to justice.
Honey Became the District Attorney for Los Angeles in Bosch: Legacy
Following his retirement from the LAPD at the end of Bosch, Harry becomes a private investigator and teams up with Honey Chandler. Together, they work to gather enough evidence to convict Carl Rogers, who previously attempted to harm both Honey and Harry’s daughter, Maddie – giving them a strong, shared motivation. Once that case is resolved, Honey enlists Harry’s help again, hiring him as a private detective to investigate and potentially clear the name of another one of her clients.
Honey Chandler experiences numerous setbacks and frustrations with the legal system in Bosch: Legacy, leading her to run for District Attorney of Los Angeles – and win. One of her initial challenges as DA is prosecuting the person responsible for the shocking murder of Jimmy Robertson, a beloved detective, which occurs in Season 3 of Bosch: Legacy.
The murder of Jimmy Robertson is a major case for Honey Chandler, who recently became District Attorney. The LAPD Chief is pushing her to quickly charge the prime suspect, but Chandler has doubts about the evidence. She enlists Harry Bosch to investigate the suspect further and explore whether anyone else might have been involved in the killing.
When Honey Chandler decides not to pursue charges against the man currently held for Jimmy Robertson’s murder, she creates tension with both the LAPD and her colleagues in the DA’s office. While many believe the case is straightforward, Chandler is convinced they’ve overlooked something and that the suspect is actually innocent. Her determination to investigate further, even when it goes against her office’s advice, establishes her as the ideal person to handle the case against Renée Ballard in Season 2 of Ballard.
Honey Could Use Harry’s Help To Investigate the Murder Charge Against Ballard
The first season of Ballard concludes with a shocking twist: Renée Ballard is arrested for murder. This comes after a history of conflict with the victim, Olivas, who previously attempted to assault her. When Ballard reported the assault, she faced demotion and was transferred to the cold case unit. While investigating an old case, Ballard discovered a troubling conspiracy within the LAPD, and Olivas appeared to be at the heart of it.
Once Olivas’s crimes were discovered, he was fired from the LAPD. However, instead of going to prison, he made a deal with District Attorney Honey Chandler. He agreed to share details about the criminal network he was involved in – and who else was participating – in exchange for his freedom. When Ballard learned Olivas wouldn’t be punished, he confronted Chandler, who explained that Olivas possessed crucial information they needed and couldn’t risk losing.
Shortly after Renée confronted Chandler, Olivas was found murdered at his home, and Renée Ballard was arrested and charged with the crime. The first season of Ballard ends with this shocking turn of events. Season 2 will likely focus on the investigation into Olivas’s murder and the legal case against Ballard, and Honey Chandler is expected to play a significant part in the upcoming season.
In Season 3 of Bosch: Legacy, Honey Chandler showed she’s a District Attorney who needs all the facts before pursuing a case. Now, in Season 2 of Ballard, she might be the one to help Renée prove her innocence in the Olivas murder, rather than prosecute her. With the help of Harry Bosch – a skilled private investigator who previously worked with Renée in Season 1 of Ballard – Honey, Harry, and Mo could join forces again to uncover the truth and clear Renée’s name.
Given that Ballard Season 2 is set in Los Angeles, fans are hoping to see Honey Chandler, the District Attorney from the Bosch universe, play a significant role. Bringing back Honey Chandler, played by Mimi Rogers, could connect the Bosch and Ballard storylines and give a popular character more screen time. Ideally, she’ll not only appear in Season 2 but become a regular character, developing a strong working relationship with Renée, similar to her dynamic with Harry Bosch in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy.
