The Back to the Future movies are a fantastic trilogy, seamlessly blending heartwarming moments with science fiction, comedy, and exciting action. What sets it apart from many other series is its consistent creative vision: all three films starred Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, and were directed by Robert Zemeckis with scripts by Bob Gale. Since the original films concluded, the Back to the Future universe has grown to include animated shows, comics, and a stage musical, with the documentary A Future on Stage offering a behind-the-scenes look at the musical’s creation.
Hollywood often revisits successful ideas with new twists, so it’s no surprise there’s talk of a Back to the Future reboot. In an interview with MovieWeb, co-writer Bob Gale shared his thoughts on what he’d like to see for the future of the franchise if he could fast-forward in time.
Looking ahead 50, 75, or even 100 years, it’s likely technology will advance in ways we can’t currently imagine. We might see something like the Sphere – perhaps an implantable device – that allows you to fully immerse yourself in a virtual experience.
So, I asked him straight up if he thought this musical would be the last time we’d see this story told in any form. He basically said…
It’s amazing when a story endures and continues to be retold across different platforms – that’s every writer’s dream, right? Think about it: Mark Twain never could have pictured his stories being adapted for film, yet Mickey Rooney played Huckleberry Finn. Similarly, H.G. Wells likely didn’t foresee movie versions of War of the Worlds or The Time Machine. I believe he’d be thrilled to know his ideas are still captivating new audiences in new and exciting ways.
The original sources still exist too. If you watch the film The Time Machine, you can read the book it’s based on to understand H.G. Wells’ original vision. So, if Back to the Future is still around in 75 to 100 years and people don’t quite understand it, we hope they’ll find a way to access a future version of a Blu-ray or 4K disc. Then they can see the movie that Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale created.
Because the Back to the Future franchise remains so popular and has successfully avoided a complete remake, it seems safe from an imminent reboot. Producer Bob Gale explains the recent musical isn’t a retelling or sequel, but a fresh take designed to create the same feelings as the original. Gale also suggests that as long as there’s a compelling story to tell in the future, he’s comfortable with the original film’s legacy remaining untouched – any project with the Back to the Future name will likely attract viewers, but can’t diminish the impact of the first movie.
You can now rent the behind-the-scenes documentary, A Future on Stage: The Making of a Broadway Musical, on Prime Video. Plus, Back to the Future: The Musical is currently touring across North America.
