Back to the Future Trilogy Is Losing Its Streaming Home

The Back to the Future movies have made almost $1 billion worldwide. Over the past four decades, the films and Michael J. Fox’s character, Marty McFly, have become iconic parts of movie history.

The entire Back to the Future trilogy—including the original from 1985, Back to the Future Part II from 1989, and Back to the Future Part III from 1990—became available on Netflix on November 1st, but will be removed on December 1st.

Robert Zemeckis directed all three Back to the Future movies, which starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson. Recently, four decades after the first film was released, Thompson shared her memories of playing Marty McFly’s mother, Lorraine Baines McFly, in the initial two movies and Maggie McFly in the third.

In a recent interview with People, director and actor Thompson praised Back to the Future as having a “perfect screenplay,” noting its concise writing. Beyond acting, Thompson has also directed episodes of popular television series including Star Trek: Picard, Will Trent, and Resident Alien.

Reflecting on her work with Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, Thompson explained that Back to the Future Part II and Part III were originally conceived as a single film, but were later expanded into two. She noted this made their construction different from the first Back to the Future movie, but still considered the screenplay perfect. Thompson also recalled that when the original Back to the Future was made, no one anticipated a sequel – there were no deals or even discussions about continuing the story, highlighting just how long ago it was.

Back to the Future Still Hits Home Today

Michael J. Fox believes bullying is a pervasive problem, even after forty years, and perhaps more so now than ever before. He recently explained in an interview that we live in a culture where bullies are everywhere. In his latest film, the character Biff Tannen embodies this, but Fox also sees time itself and his own battle with Parkinson’s disease as forms of bullying. He emphasizes that the film is about confronting these challenges with courage and resilience, qualities he believes resonate with audiences because they’re facing their own struggles. People are connecting with the movie on a deeper level, recognizing themes they might not have consciously realized were there.
