In the realm of popular tropical dating shows, Bachelor in Paradise was once a front-runner. Yet now, there’s an abundance of competition, ranging from Peacock’s Love Island to Netflix productions like Too Hot to Handle. This month, the spinoff of The Bachelor returned to the 2025 TV lineup with a refined atmosphere, but even this update failed to win over at least one former participant from Bachelor Nation. Tanner Tolbert expressed his critiques of ABC’s series, although I don’t share all of his views.
Tanner Tolbert was initially introduced to us during Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season of ‘The Bachelorette’, and later appeared in ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Season 2. It was there that he encountered Jade Roper, and they have been married since 2016. Despite the franchise playing a significant role in their relationship, Tolbert has expressed negative sentiments about ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Season 10, as expressed on his Instagram Stories (via Swooon).
Instead of ‘Bachelor in Paradise,’ it’s being called ‘TEMU Love Island.’ However, the new producers seem to be attempting to emulate ‘Love Island,’ but their execution appears to be lacking. The new setting is questionable; if they want to mimic ‘Love Island,’ they should either opt for a luxurious villa or stick with ‘paradise.’ This generic resort seems to lack the charm and excitement of the original. It feels quite uninspired.
It’s indisputable that the popular reality dating show, “Love Island,” (which can be accessed with a Peacock subscription) has undeniably taken over most of the conversation in this genre, attracting massive viewership for its streaming platform. I suspect that Scott Teti, the new showrunner of “Bachelor in Paradise,” is aiming to modernize ABC’s program to resemble shows like “Love Island” and other streaming series, and I wholeheartedly approve of this strategy.

Discover the captivating world of shows like “Love Island” and the hottest new releases from NBC and Bravo by becoming a subscriber of Peacock TV, all for just $7.99 per month or $79.99 annually! I find the new accommodations in Costa Rica far more appealing than the non-air-conditioned houses we stayed at during past seasons in Mexico. It may not be as lavish as the villa on Love Island, Fiji, but it’s certainly an improvement over the lodgings from Season 9 of 2023. Tanner Tolbert added:
Or in a more conversational way:
I much prefer the new place in Costa Rica to the sweaty houses we had in Mexico during previous seasons. It’s not as fancy as the Love Island villa in Fiji, but it’s a step up from where we stayed for Season 9 in 2023. Tanner Tolbert chimed in:
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel that the dream sequences come off as overly melodramatic and contrived. It seems rather illogical to keep the actors lodged in different hotels, which significantly reduces the opportunities for meaningful interactions and conversations among the cast.
I’ll definitely provide him with the cheesy dream sequences. On Bachelor in Paradise, there’s always a touch of silliness, which is okay, but I dislike it when any part of the show appears staged, and that’s how those segments can sometimes seem.
In a respectful manner, let me express a different perspective: I find the accommodations at this hotel quite satisfactory. There appears to be an abundance of engaging interactions taking place within these rooms, as evidenced by the frequent camera coverage in the hotel (it’s more often capturing scenes from the rooms than it did in Sayulita).
Previously featured Bachelorette participant ended his outburst on a somewhat optimistic note, expressing a tentative wish that his fellow cast members from the reality series could produce an excellent season in their future endeavors.
Though I’m optimistic that this production could deliver engaging narratives and connections, the current format leaves a bit to be desired. A sad farewell to the authentic Bachelor in Paradise 🌴.
Tanner Tolbert isn’t alone among Bachelor Nation or his family in casting criticism towards their show. His wife, Jade Roper, who debuted during Chris Soules’ season, has voiced her disapproval about the inclusion of the Golden cast members. On social media, she expressed that it would have made her extremely uneasy to be surrounded by six older men persistently trying to pursue her.
I value everyone’s comfort and safety, but based on my observations of the Goldens on Paradise, they seem to be the ones who bring the most fun. And I find myself quite intrigued by a particular non-romantic duo among them.
Don’t miss out! Join Tanner Tolbert and Jade Roper as they share their thoughts during the next episode of Bachelor in Paradise, airing at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, July 21, only on ABC. Or if you prefer to stream, catch it the following day with a Hulu subscription!
