Aziz Ansari Discusses “Surreal” Experience With Iconic Star

Aziz Ansari’s new movie, *Good Fortune*, feels like a return to classic American films that balanced tough times with both hope and humor.

Aziz Ansari created this special mix by using his own comedy skills and also getting a major assist from Keanu Reeves. Though Reeves is currently famous for his action roles in the *John Wick* movies, he’s just as talented at comedy. What were Ansari’s thoughts on directing ‘The Chosen One’?

Honestly, working with this actor was a bit daunting at first. Being a 90s kid – I was born in ’83 – he’s a total icon, someone I practically grew up with! It felt really surreal to be collaborating with him, but I quickly got comfortable. I’m a huge fan, and he absolutely crushed it. He *is* the heart and soul of this movie, and his performance is both genuinely funny and surprisingly touching. I still can’t believe he agreed to work with me on this!

Keanu Reeves has received a lot of positive attention for his role as Gabriel, an angel who attempts to help both Aziz Ansari’s character, Arj, and Seth Rogen’s character, Jeff, see things differently. However, his efforts lead to hilariously disastrous consequences for all three. Ansari was committed to making his character’s story feel authentic and did extensive research, even spending a day working as a DoorDash delivery driver alongside the actor playing Jeff, which became a key scene in the movie.

A Legacy of Cinematic Inspiration

During a recent interview with MovieWeb, Ansari revealed the films he watched while preparing for his movie, *Good Fortune*.

I was really inspired by classic films like *My Man Godfrey* and *Sullivan’s Travels* while working on this project. Those movies from the 1930s and 40s often tackled serious topics with humor, and I thought that approach would work well now. Plus, having actors like Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves involved felt like a great way to bring those old ideas to a modern audience and have some fun with it.

The classic 1930s film *My Man Godfrey*, known for its witty humor, starred Carole Lombard and William Powell. A new version planned for 2025 reimagines the story with Seth Rogen playing a wealthy, modern character and Aziz Ansari as his assistant – a role inspired by the original’s charming vagrant. Like the original, the new film will focus on themes of kindness and understanding, particularly during challenging economic times.

Ansari’s film draws inspiration from classic movies like Ernst Lubitsch’s *Heaven Can Wait*, which explores what happens after death, Preston Sturges’ *Sullivan’s Travels*, a film about finding humor even in difficult times, and heartwarming stories featuring heavenly help, such as *The Bishop’s Wife* and *It’s a Wonderful Life*.

Good Fortune explores timeless questions about what truly makes a life worthwhile, prompting viewers to think about their own beliefs. The film features characters facing difficult realities, but it also offers plenty of humor. It opens in theaters on October 17, 2025.
