The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen huge success since its beginning with Iron Man. However, Avengers: Endgame stands out as the most significant event in the entire series. Marvel Studios remarkably wove together a complex story over more than 20 films, and after 11 years, delivered a truly satisfying ending.
Ever since Avengers: Endgame became a huge critical and commercial success, people have been wondering how Marvel Studios could possibly surpass it. Questions arose about whether they’d bring back Thanos, and if not, who the next big villain might be. With the original Avengers team largely finished, fans also wondered which heroes would lead the next major storyline.
By 2025, the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will be clear. The MCU is heading towards Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude the current Multiverse Saga. Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom, who will be the main villain. He’ll face off against a combination of established and new MCU heroes, as well as characters from different universes, potentially bringing back actors from the original X-Men movies.
With the directors of past Marvel hits returning, Avengers: Secret Wars is shaping up to be the epic finale the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading towards – both since Endgame and throughout the entire history of Marvel films. Because expectations are so high, today’s news is particularly disappointing for Marvel fans.
Avengers: Secret Wars Released Today In Marvel’s Original Phase 6 Plan
As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited when Marvel Studios announced Avengers: Secret Wars back at Comic-Con in 2022! They set the release date for November 7, 2025, which felt like a long way off then. They basically had three years to pull it all together, and honestly, if everything had gone perfectly, we’d all be rushing to see it in theaters right now! It’s wild to think how close we are.
As a huge Marvel fan, I honestly think Secret Wars had the potential to be the biggest thing the MCU has done since Endgame – maybe even bigger! I know some people are starting to feel a little burnt out on superhero movies, but I’m expecting this one to be a real cultural moment. I’m predicting it’ll absolutely crush box office records and remind everyone just how powerful the Marvel brand still is.
Marvel postponed the film for several reasons. Initially, the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike caused delays for many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, creating a ripple effect due to the interconnected storylines. Later, the studio decided to move away from using Kang the Conqueror as the central villain, effectively requiring a complete restart for the next two Avengers films.
The Secret Wars movie we might have seen with a perfect development process would probably be quite different from the version currently planned for release on December 17, 2027.
The situation stems from Kang’s planned role as the major villain throughout the Multiverse Saga. Marvel initially cast Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains (also known as Kang) in the first season of Loki, intending him to be the central antagonist following Endgame. They even previously titled the movie leading up to Secret Wars as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Kang was becoming a central villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and season 2 of Loki. However, due to legal issues surrounding actor Jonathan Majors, Marvel decided not to recast the role. Instead, they’ve shifted focus to Doctor Doom as the primary threat across the multiverse.
If Avengers: Secret Wars had been released on schedule, Robert Downey Jr. might not have been considered for the role of Doctor Doom. However, Kevin Feige has mentioned discussing a potential return for Downey Jr. to the MCU as Doom before 2023, suggesting he might have been planned as the main villain even before the Kang storyline was cancelled.
Currently, Avengers: Secret Wars isn’t being filmed and won’t be in theaters anytime soon. Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers are concentrating on Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release in December 2026. We’ll have to wait over two years for Avengers: Secret Wars, and even then, the release date could change or the movie might be split into two parts.
