Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind the blockbuster hit Avengers: Doomsday, are now involved with a prequel film focusing on the character John Rambo.
Okay, so I just heard some really interesting news! Lionsgate is making a prequel to the Rambo movies, and it’s going to be called John Rambo. Apparently, the director of Sisu, Jalmari Helander, is at the helm, which is awesome. And get this – Noah Centineo, who I really liked in The Recruit, is in talks to play a young John Rambo! It’s going to be fascinating to see his take on the character.
The Russos’ production company, AGBO, is taking on the Rambo prequel. Joe and Anthony Russo will be executive producers, and Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco will produce for AGBO. They’ll be working with Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, and Jonathan Yunger from Millennium Media on the project.
What else do we know about the John Rambo movie?
The new movie starring John Rambo is a prequel set during the Vietnam War, filmed in Thailand. It will show the events that turned him into the iconic action hero we know. Details about the story are still being kept secret.
Russo-Otsto announced they’re excited to explore the backstory of John Rambo, a hugely popular and recognizable action hero. They believe Rambo is known not just for his strength, but for his strong moral compass and dedication to fighting for what he believes in. They feel director Jalmari Helander is the perfect choice to honor the character with a film that combines intense action and emotional resonance, and they’re happy to be working with Lionsgate and Millennium to bring Rambo to a new audience.
Charlotte Koh from Lionsgate praised AGBO, led by Anthony and Joe Russo, as incredibly creative storytellers who are consistently delivering exciting and emotionally resonant action movies. She believes combining Lionsgate and Millennium Media’s existing relationship with AGBO’s innovative work and Jalmari Helander’s unique directing style will make the new John Rambo film a major event that action movie fans won’t want to miss.
Production on John Rambo is expected to begin in early 2026. A release date has not yet been set.
