Unfortunately, one familiar face from the X-Men movies won’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) event will finally unite the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. While many actors from Fox’s X-Men films will be involved—including James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellen as Magneto—one key performer will be missing.
Even though fans are excited about the returning characters in Doomsday, some are questioning why other familiar faces from the original X-Men films haven’t been confirmed to appear. Many are particularly wondering about Famke Janssen, who famously played Jean Grey in the first three X-Men movies.
Famke Janssen has confirmed she won’t reprise her role as Jean Grey even if the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film brings back her former X-Men co-stars and potentially revives the franchise. She admitted to Screen Rant that she isn’t familiar with the plot of Doomsday and plans to learn more about the story.
Here are all the confirmed X-Men characters in Avengers: Doomsday:
- Patrick Stewart – Professor X
- Ian McKellen – Magneto
- Alan Cumming – Nightcrawler
- Kelsey Grammer – Beast
- Rebecca Romijn – Mystique
- James Marsden – Cyclops
- Channing Tatum – Gambit
Other Major X-Men Actors Missing From Avengers: Doomsday
Halle Berry – Storm
Halle Berry, who played Storm in the original X-Men films, wasn’t included in Avengers: Doomsday. This is surprising, as she was a key figure in the X-Men franchise and helped bring diversity and cultural relevance to Marvel’s stories about mutants.
There’s still hope that Halle Berry might reprise her role as Storm, particularly after Alan Cumming – who’s returning as Nightcrawler – suggested she could appear in Avengers: Doomsday. She could be a surprise addition to the X-Men’s world, maybe even as a key player in the fight against Doctor Doom.
Anna Paquin – Rogue
Anna Paquin originally portrayed Rogue in the first X-Men movie and later reprised the role in the following two films. A longer cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past further highlighted Rogue’s importance to the story and her overall place in the history of the X-Men universe.
Many fans feel Anna Paquin’s portrayal of Rogue hasn’t lived up to her potential, especially when compared to the version seen in X-Men: The Animated Series. While Marvel hasn’t announced whether she’ll reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday, a return could be a chance for her to truly shine.
Anna Paquin has said she’d be open to reprising her role as Rogue, as she shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Shawn Ashmore – Iceman
Shawn Ashmore, who famously played Iceman in the X-Men films for Fox, hasn’t been confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. He was a key part of the original X-Men trilogy and returned for a substantial role in the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Iceman has frequently joined the X-Men on their adventures, so it’s disappointing not to see him involved as they face off against Doom. In a January 2022 interview with Screen Rant, Shawn Ashmore stated he’d happily reprise his role as the mutant hero if Marvel asked, noting that with the Multiverse now being a major focus in the MCU, “anything’s possible.”
I haven’t seen the latest Spider-Man movie, and I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but I’ve heard a lot of characters make an appearance. After ‘Days of Future Past,’ I thought that was the end for our group of actors because Disney was acquiring the rights. It felt like the story was finished for us, the original cast. I’ve come to terms with that, but you never know what could happen. I have no idea if they’ll recast and start over, or if they’ll bring actors from the Fox X-Men films into the Marvel Universe. If they asked me to return, I’d absolutely do it. I love playing that character, I’m a comic book fan, and it’s something I’m really passionate about. But I’m also content with having had the chance to play him in four movies, and I’m okay if that’s all there is.
In April 2025, Ashmore sadly revealed that Marvel Studios hadn’t asked him to reprise his role as Iceman in Avengers: Doomsday.
Elliot Page – Kitty Pryde
Elliot Page played Kitty Pryde, also known as Shadowcat, in the X-Men films The Last Stand and Days of Future Past. Many fans would be thrilled if the actor returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially in Avengers: Doomsday.
Anna Page, who played Kitty Pryde, hasn’t said if she’d reprise the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, since Kitty is an important character in X-Men history, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, featuring mutants, might briefly mention what she’s been doing.
Vinnie Jones – Juggernaut
Juggernaut appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, but Vinnie Jones didn’t return to play the character after his role in X-Men: The Last Stand. Despite only appearing once in the X-Men trilogy, Jones made a strong impression as Juggernaut, and many fans would have liked to see him reprise the role in a future film like Doomsday.
I was really bummed to hear Colan Jones wasn’t back as Warlock in Deadpool & Wolverine, but I finally understood why in a recent Yahoo interview! He said it’s a huge deal, both physically and mentally, just getting into that Warlock costume. Apparently, it’s a really demanding process!
I was recently approached about doing the new Deadpool movie, and after talking with the director, Shawn Levy, I realized how challenging it is, both physically and mentally, to wear that suit. Being in it all day is really tough – you can’t even drink normally, only through a straw. Ultimately, we weren’t able to reach an agreement for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Famke Janssen – Jean Grey
Janssen indicated in October that she’s completely unfamiliar with Marvel Studios’ Doomsday plans:
To be honest, I’m not familiar with the story itself. I’ve never really been into comic books, even after working in this world for a while. I’m looking forward to seeing the final product, though, and discovering the story along with everyone else to find out how it all wraps up.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, Avengers: Doomsday kicks off the epic finale of the Multiverse Saga, uniting Earth’s mightiest heroes against the villain Doctor Doom. The film boasts an incredible cast including stars from the X-Men, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Wakanda, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom alongside Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Simu Liu, and David Harbour. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
