Avengers: Doomsday Makes History With MCU Star’s Leading Role (Report)

As reported by a trusted source, “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to create history with its main Marvel Cinematic Universe star. The upcoming “Avengers 5” faces a significant challenge. Apart from dealing with an immense Multiversal clash between Earth’s most powerful heroes and the wicked Doctor Doom, it will have to do so without some of its key A-list actors, such as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, in the main Avengers squad (even though Downey is still part of the cast as the movie’s masked villain).

It appears that this development could pave the way for other prominent stars in the superhero series to assume the roles once held by these iconic characters. Emerging figures such as Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova are expected to draw attention, but one individual is said to capture the limelight even more significantly.

In a recent episode of The Ringer’s podcast, The Town, it was disclosed by Matthew Belloni that he has heard Avengers: Doomsday will be the initial Avengers movie where Chris Hemsworth’s character, Thor, will take on the main role.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, in discussions regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its potential to launch new talent as it has for decades, I shared with my guest Ben Fritz that based on what I’ve gathered about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Hemsworth is set to play a key role as the second lead.

According to Ben Fritz, a common pattern dating back to Christopher Reeve’s time is that when a movie is successful, the character should outshine the actor portraying it.

Craig Horlbeck: “But Robert Downey Jr. suggests the opposite.”

Matthew Belloni indicates that based on what he’s learned about “Avengers: Doomsday,” Chris Hemsworth is the second lead and plays a significant role in the film.

This is a pivotal point in Hemsworth’s time as Marvel Studios’ Thor, as he hasn’t had a chance to fully take the lead in an Avengers movie yet. Although the character has been central in all previous Avengers films, his roles have often been secondary to characters such as Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.

With the upcoming “Avengers” sequel, Chris Hemsworth is expected to take center stage as the head of the superhero squad and share leading roles with Downey’s latest Multiversal antagonist.

It’s interesting to point out that fans might have picked up on Chris Hemsworth’s significant part in the Doomsday plot as early as March of this year. The Thor character actor was the initial one unveiled during the now-famous chair livestream, which showed off a large portion of the Avengers 5 cast. This could suggest that the actor/character’s reported leading role is not just speculation.

On December 18, 2026, the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters. This upcoming film is directed by the talented duo, Joe and Anthony Russo, who have previously worked on “Endgame” and “Infinity War”. The storyline brings together iconic Marvel Universe characters such as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor with newcomers from the Marvel Studios roster like the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts. Additionally, it features actors known for their roles in classic X-Men movies to combat the sinister plan of Doctor Doom to dominate the Marvel Multiverse.

Every Avengers Movie Lead So Far

The Avengers

In 2012, the film “The Avengers” introduced the dynamic duo that would form the basis of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) “Avengers” series for years to come by bringing together Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. In this first Avengers adventure, these two characters led the team, taking the helm of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

In this scene, Thor found himself dwarfed by these colossal figures with extraordinary abilities, taking on a backup role instead of the main character as some fans might have anticipated following his status as one of the early Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes to secure a standalone movie at that particular juncture.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

In the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Thor appeared to have a reduced role compared to characters such as Bruce Banner (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen. The focus was shifted more towards these characters, while Hemsworth’s Asgardian character had less screen time.

Allow me to clarify: While it’s important to note that Age of Ultron remains predominantly Tony Stark’s story, as he plays a significant role in both initiating the issue (alongside Ruffalo’s Bruce) concerning the rogue AI that arises from the creation of the film’s titular robotic antagonist, Thor is somewhat underutilized in this movie. He gets to shine with some fantastic action scenes, a side-splitting hammer joke, but his character development or involvement in the plot seems rather limited compared to other characters.

Avengers: Infinity War

In “Avengers: Doomsday,” fans might find a film that comes the closest to being a Thor-centric Avengers story so far; yet, it still trails behind the original pairing of Chris and Tony. This movie offers Thor an abundance of tasks, as he essentially spearheads his own mission alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy.

His account encompasses reviving a dormant celestial body, crafting his latest Stormbreaker weapon, and engaging in a battle with the formidable Thanos in the untamed lands of Wakanda. Nevertheless, it’s Captain America and Iron Man who steer the team and ultimately the film.

Avengers: Endgame

Similar to the last “Avengers” movie, “Avengers: Endgame” is once more predominantly starring Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. This is notable because the Infinity Saga’s conclusion functioned as a farewell for their characters, as both actors decided to depart from the Marvel franchise following this film.

Although Thor participated in a significant final battle alongside Captain America and Iron Man against Thanos, the Mad Titan, fans had anticipated a more prominent role for him. Fortunately, in the upcoming film “Doomsday“, it appears that Thor will be the primary focus as the last of the original Avengers still in action.
