As a huge movie fan, 2026 already looks incredible! We’re getting a ton of sequels to all my favorite franchises, but it seems like everything is building towards a really interesting showdown between a couple of big titles, especially Dune: Part Three. It reminds me a little of the Barbie and Oppenheimer phenomenon last year, but honestly, it feels like a completely different situation.
Now that the next Jumanji movie is also scheduled for a December 25th release, Avengers: Doomsday might finally get the chance to deliver the impactful crossover event Marvel fans have been waiting for. However, it’s still uncertain whether this will actually happen or if it’s just hopeful speculation.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three Isn’t Like Barbenheimer
It’s rare in film history to see two such different movies succeed equally. These films offered contrasting themes and styles, yet both were hits with critics and audiences. This unusual pairing was a one-time event, but Hollywood still seems to be searching for that same magic.
The ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon was unique because it wasn’t about one movie winning over the other – both films thrived, and everyone benefited. Now, things are different. With the release of big finales for major franchises like Dune and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with already high ticket prices, a sense of competition is naturally building between these films.
While Dune is a well-regarded science fiction series, it doesn’t have the same broad appeal as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU itself has been facing some challenges lately, and even its successes suggest the superhero genre might be losing momentum. Both films need to perform well, but releasing them on the same holiday weekend creates a direct competition where only one can truly win. Adding to this, Dune: Part Three is dominating IMAX screens, meaning the hoped-for ‘Dunesday’ phenomenon won’t be comparable to ‘Barbenheimer,’ and ideally, the competition wouldn’t be happening at all.
Jumanji’s Next Sequel May Give Avengers: Doomsday the Out it Needs
This film series has surprisingly spawned many sequels, and deservedly so. The movies are enjoyable, humorous, and offer a fresh take on a classic original. Its popularity has led to a new release date – December 25th, 2026 – which creates a significant opportunity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Releasing the movie on December 11th is ideal because it allows time to book valuable IMAX showings and appeals to fans of both franchises – there’s a lot of overlap between those who enjoy each series. Also, for a movie like Jumanji, having it out during the holidays means families have a fun, easy-to-enjoy option, especially since Dune: Part Three is geared towards a more mature audience.
Releasing a big movie like Avengers: Doomsday on November 11th is a smart move, as it gives people one last chance to see it in theaters before they travel to be with family for the holidays. While movies often come out around Christmas, having three major releases on the same day is unusual and wouldn’t work well long-term.
The new Jumanji movie has a great chance to succeed, and its recent release date change should be used to its advantage. While shifting the date again is possible, it seems Avengers: Doomsday would benefit more from that slot. That film has a lot of expectations to meet and deserves the chance to truly shine, especially since its release was already delayed to ensure high quality. It wouldn’t be fair to any of these films to have them compete directly with two other major releases.
Avengers: Doomsday Needs as Much Room as Possible
Since the release of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced mixed results, with more films falling flat than succeeding. Some movies, like Captain America: Brave New World, didn’t receive positive reviews, while others, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, were huge successes. Thunderbolts received good reviews but didn’t perform well at the box office. Overall, the franchise seems to be finding its way again after a period of inconsistency.
It’s been nearly twenty years since a shared cinematic universe had this kind of long-term, connected storytelling, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s importance to film is clear. Now that the franchise is strong again, Avengers: Doomsday has the opportunity to fulfill expectations built over years and remind dedicated fans what they love about it.
Considering everything, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday really needs to stand on its own. It can’t compete with a film like Dune: Part Three, which is straightforward and doesn’t require any prior knowledge to enjoy. Avengers: Doomsday is a massive, self-contained event, and it needs to have the spotlight all to itself.
I’m really hoping the studio decides to release Avengers: Doomsday sooner rather than later and gets it into IMAX theaters! If they do, it’ll let fans fully focus on this huge event without feeling like they’re missing out on other great movies. This is a once-in-a-lifetime crossover with the world’s best heroes facing an incredible threat, and honestly, it deserves a dedicated moment to shine. Doomsday has the potential to be amazing and remind everyone why we love the MCU so much, so let’s give it the chance to deliver!
