Chris Evans returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday was a huge moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the directors say it was always likely to happen. Evans played Steve Rogers consistently throughout the franchise, appearing in at least one Marvel movie every year from 2011 to 2019, highlighting how vital his character was.
It initially seemed logical that Chris Evans wouldn’t return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, considering his character’s retirement after traveling back in time in Avengers: Endgame. However, the movie later cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Given that both Evans and Downey are iconic figures of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would have felt unbalanced to only include one of them, and it appears the filmmakers didn’t fully consider this when planning the cast.
The Russo Brothers Broke Their Silence On Chris Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday Return
Following a limited one-week theatrical run with screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Marvel Studios has now launched the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday online. The trailer highlights the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The Russo Brothers shared the trailer on Instagram, celebrating their frequent collaborator’s return – they previously directed Evans in four Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
The directors who made The Winter Soldier and Civil War, as well as the recent Infinity War and Endgame Avengers films, have a strong working relationship with Chris Evans. Reflecting on their experiences, the directors shared, “This character truly impacted our lives. This story is what brought us all together, and it felt inevitable that we’d return to it…”
The Russo Brothers’ Comments Only Confirm What MCU Fans Knew Since 2024
The Russo brothers, who directed several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, have spoken about Chris Evans returning as Captain America, though Robert Downey Jr. also shared a preview online. According to the directors, they actually planned for this possibility from the very beginning, which confirms what many fans have suspected for a while.
The Russo brothers were confirmed to direct Avengers: Doomsday at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024. As soon as the news broke that they were back, Marvel fans began wildly speculating about how Chris Evans might reprise his role as Captain America in the film.
Following the release of Endgame, fans speculated about a potential TV show centered around Steve Rogers returning the Infinity Stones. Though that didn’t materialize, once it was announced the Russo brothers were returning to the MCU, many believed Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America – and Avengers: Doomsday confirms that prediction was accurate and intentionally planned.
