A recent Marvel Studios announcement suggests a satisfying conclusion to the Kang the Conqueror storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it involves revisiting a previously considered idea. Initially, the next Avengers movie was planned to focus entirely on Kang, with a working title of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, before Robert Downey Jr. agreed to reprise his role as Doctor Doom, the direction shifted.
Now that Marvel has fired Jonathan Majors, they’ve decided to change the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. Kang, who was previously being built up in several projects, will be replaced by Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Although Kang and his alternate versions don’t seem to be part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, Marvel could still give fans a good resolution to his story, and they already have a clear path to do so.
Avengers: Doomsday Writer Reveals How A New Team Could Have Defeated A Kang Variant
During a Reddit Q&A about his show Chad Powers, Michael Waldron – who was originally writing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and is now helping Stephen McFeely and the Russo Brothers with the new Avengers films – shared an interesting detail about Kang the Conqueror. He said that the Young Avengers were planned to defeat one version of Kang.
A Marvel writer shared that he and Jeff Loveness, who previously worked on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, came up with a story idea where the Young Avengers would defeat a Kang who wasn’t yet fully experienced. The heroes would be thrilled with their victory, but the movie would then reveal it was actually Kang’s very first day in the role.
Waldron suggested this version of Kang was probably the lizard-like Kang seen with the Council of Kangs in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Throughout the Multiverse Saga, the MCU has been hinting at the formation of the Young Avengers, and Ms. Marvel has already started building her team by recruiting Kate Bishop and, it appears, Cassie Lang.
The Young Avengers Defeating Kang The Conqueror In Doomsday Is What The Team & The MCU Need
Although that particular story won’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday – the writer wouldn’t have mentioned it otherwise – I think the movie could still find a way to use elements of it to benefit a couple of ongoing storylines. With so much groundwork laid for the character and his different versions, I really hope Marvel delivers a good ending to Kang’s story.
Rather than having the Young Avengers fight a weaker version of Kang, it would be a stronger move for Avengers: Doomsday to have them defeat the primary Kang the Conqueror. This could happen early in the film, effectively ending Kang’s story and opening the way for Doctor Doom to become the central villain, while also proving the Young Avengers are a force to be reckoned with.
Introducing the Young Avengers would immediately generate excitement, something Marvel really needs after the mixed reception to recent movies in the Multiverse Saga. Considering the Ant-Man family was able to beat Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Young Avengers seem capable of finishing the job in Avengers: Doomsday, finally wrapping up Kang’s story and paving the way for a thrilling new MCU team.
