A recent report suggests that the second season of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will have fewer episodes than the first. Season one covered the beginning of Aang’s story, including meeting Katara and Sokka, and adapted the first ‘book’ of the original animated series. The new season will focus on Aang’s search for an earthbending teacher and will introduce the popular character Toph Beifong. While the original animated series used 20 episodes for this part of the story, Netflix told it in eight hour-long episodes. Unfortunately, a new update indicates that season two will have even fewer episodes.
According to Caleb Williams, a trusted source at Knight Edge Media, the upcoming second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender will have only seven episodes. Netflix decided to shorten the season from the eight episodes that were in the first season.

This is worrying news. Since the animated series needed 20 episodes to fully tell its story, reducing the number of episodes for the live-action series from eight to seven suggests that some plotlines might be cut. This could mean the new season won’t follow the original story as closely as fans might hope.
Beyond introducing Toph, the second book of Avatar: The Last Airbender developed exciting stories like Azula becoming a villain, the growing tension between Zuko and Iroh, and Aang learning earthbending. While these storylines are likely to be part of Season 2 on Netflix, there’s a concern that the show might cut out important plot points and character development to fit everything into just seven episodes.
Fans can expect the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix around 2026. Along with a fresh new logo, most of the original cast will be returning, including Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim.
Why Avatar Season 2’s Episode Count Update Is Even More Concerning

It’s understandable to be worried that Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 only has seven episodes instead of the usual eight, because this shorter length could happen again in future seasons of the Netflix show.
Cutting the number of episodes might have one benefit – getting straight to the main plot – but it would probably mean losing some fun side stories and limiting the chance to fully develop the show’s world.
This decision aligns with comments made by Jabbar Raisani, an executive producer for Avatar: The Last Airbender Seasons 2 and 3, to TopMob in May 2024. He explained that the Netflix series will need to streamline parts of the original story as it progresses.
The new season feels similar to the first one. While it covers a lot of the same material as the animated series, we won’t have as many episodes, so we’ll need to streamline some of the content.
As a fan, it’s a little disappointing to hear they might be shortening the season. It makes me wonder if Netflix is trying to save money, and that’s why they’re not fully exploring everything from Book Two of The Last Airbender like I was hoping they would.
Some viewers thought the first season of the show felt too fast-paced, and there was hope that Season 2 would have more episodes – increasing from eight to ten – to allow for better storytelling. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening, and the change might actually make the existing problems with Netflix’s live-action Avatar series even worse.
