Avatar: Fire & Ash Finally Hits Huge Box Office Milestone After Trailing Behind First Two Movies

After a slower start compared to its previous films, Avatar: Fire and Ash has reached a significant box office achievement domestically. This new movie from James Cameron continues the story of the world of Avatar, following the original 2009 film and 2022’s The Way of Water. The first Avatar is the highest-grossing movie ever worldwide, and The Way of Water currently ranks third.

According to Deadline, Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $28.9 million domestically in its fourth week, bringing its total earnings in the US to $350 million. This makes it only the fifth movie released in 2025 to reach that level, following Superman ($354.2 million), Zootopia 2 ($380.7 million), Lilo & Stitch ($423.8 million), and A Minecraft Movie ($423.9 million).

While Fire and Ash reached a significant box office milestone, it took 28 days – longer than previous Avatar films. The original Avatar achieved the same result in 17 days, and The Way of Water even faster, in just 14 days. It’s important to remember that domestic box office numbers don’t always tell the whole story of the franchise’s success.

The Avatar films have consistently made more money from international audiences than from those in North America. Both movies are among the highest-grossing films ever worldwide, but domestically, the first Avatar ranks fourth, with 72.7% of its earnings coming from overseas. The Way of Water follows a similar pattern, ranking seventh domestically and earning 70.5% of its revenue internationally.

The upcoming 2025 film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is performing similarly to past trends: most of its earnings have come from overseas audiences. Currently, it ranks as the 28th highest-grossing movie worldwide, but only the 78th highest in the United States and Canada.

I’m really curious to see just how successful this movie will be! Right now, things look pretty good – there aren’t many big releases competing with it, especially not until Pixar’s Hoppers comes out in March. Still, I’m trying to be realistic, and it’s possible it might only reach around $450 million domestically, or maybe even fall a little short of that.

If current trends continue, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to earn significantly less money domestically than its previous installments. It’s projected to fall behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($453.8 million) and end up around the 31st highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
