Animators are upset with people who leaked the entire Avatar: The Last Airbender movie online before it was officially released.
The new animated movie, originally known as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, continues the story of the popular Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008). It was planned for cinemas, but will now premiere on Paramount+ this October. Unfortunately, a high-quality version of the entire film has reportedly been leaked online.
Artists who contributed to the movie Avatar: The Last Airbender are speaking out against those who leaked it online after the full film appeared on the internet. Animator Julia Schoel, known as @papajoolia on X (formerly Twitter), shared her disappointment about the film bypassing its theatrical release and how the leak undermines the years of effort put in by the creative team.
We spent years making the Avatar movie, hoping to share it with everyone in theaters. It’s really disappointing to see it leaked online and clips shared all over social media. While I understand people are upset with Paramount’s choice to pull the film from cinemas, that doesn’t excuse piracy. Even waiting until after the official release to pirate would have been less damaging. Ultimately, it’s incredibly disrespectful to the artists who poured their hearts and souls into this project.
Public anger grew as more people involved in the film, including Tom Barkel, voiced their concerns that the leak would hurt the movie’s release.
I was also an artist on this film, and I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out. While I understand why fans might share leaked content, the real problem is that the official release was compromised – both by the leaks and by decisions made by Paramount. It could have been a celebratory moment for everyone, but now it’s causing division about whether to watch it now or later. Some people say the artists got paid, so it doesn’t matter, but by not supporting the official release, you ultimately hurt the chances of future projects for artists in a difficult industry. It’s more complicated than it seems. That said, the movie is a stunning work of art, and I’m so glad I was a part of it. If you enjoy it, please support it so we can create more art like this!
Animator Henry Thurlow furiously called out the leakers:
I’ve mentioned this before, and it bears repeating: most artists aren’t motivated by money – it’s rarely substantial anyway. They create for the joy of releasing their work and celebrating that moment. To steal that joy through leaks is incredibly hateful and disrespectful. True fans understand this and avoid leaks at all costs. For those who don’t, what will it take to understand you’re hurting the artists? Do we need to see them suffer, even to the point of self-harm? It’s shameful, and those who leak content are particularly reprehensible.
Artist Ilkwang Kim (@gimigam2) highlighted the hard work and dedication of the film’s creators, and expressed disappointment that leaks have spoiled the initial experience for viewers.
While money is important, it’s not the only reward. Many people dedicated a lot of time and effort to this project, eagerly anticipating its release. Whether their role was large or small, numerous colleagues contributed to its creation. There’s a special feeling when the audience is captivated, the lasting impression after the work is finished, and then the quiet pride of seeing your name appear in the credits.
Look, as a critic, I see a lot of films, and sometimes a single, quiet moment truly resonates. It’s intensely personal, and when something special like that is captured on film, it feels like a gift – a reward for everyone involved, regardless of the final product. It’s devastating to see that intimacy violated, especially knowing it might have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those involved. Honestly, whoever leaked that footage deserves the strongest condemnation – I can’t even begin to express how much it angers me.
Tessa Bright, a leader on the film’s team (@teebeedraws), said the reaction from fans was deeply upsetting.
Hello everyone, I was a leader on this film project. I know we all have our own feelings about how things have unfolded, and everyone is free to make their own decisions. However, it’s really upsetting to see some fans being unkind to the incredibly dedicated artists who poured years of their lives into making this film the best it could be. It’s understandable that those of us who worked on the project are frustrated. The hard work and dedication that went into it is clear in the final result, and I believe many of you will agree. Even if you don’t agree with us, I hope you can still be respectful. To the fans and industry professionals who have supported us, thank you – your support meant the world and made it all worthwhile.
As a huge fan, I was shocked to see what happened with the leaked Avatar: The Last Airbender movie! It started on April 12th when short clips popped up on X – we got glimpses of characters like Tagah and Gorillavark, and even a shot of Team Avatar together. The person who posted them claimed Nickelodeon accidentally emailed them the whole thing. Then, just a day later on April 13th, the entire movie was online, and it was in really good quality. It’s been a crazy few days for us fans!
The story of Avatar: The Last Airbender picks up after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai. Aang, the last Airbender, discovers another living airbender named Tagah and learns about a powerful staff that could help restore his lost culture. He and his friends join forces with Tagah to find the staff before a group called the Denied can get their hands on it and threaten the peace they fought so hard to achieve.
The voice cast for Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender features Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Fire Lord Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Dee Bradley Baker as Appa and Momo, Freida Pinto as Avatar Sonam, Ke Huy Quan as Avatar Xian, Taika Waititi as the Gorillavark, Geraldine Viswanathan as Kallak, Peta Sergeant as Jie, and Ken Jeong as the Cabbage Merchant.
