James Cameron’s Avatar films are known for their massive scope and have become some of the most successful movies ever made. The first Avatar movie, released in 2009, remains the highest-grossing film of all time, earning over $2.9 billion worldwide. Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022 after a 13-year gap, also performed incredibly well, grossing $2.3 billion – the third-highest total ever. The latest installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, arrived in 2025 and, while not as big a hit as the previous films, still earned nearly $1.5 billion, placing it among the top-performing movies behind Ne Zha 2 and Zootopia 2.
Despite the huge profits the Avatar films have made, they are very costly for Disney to produce. This is because of the extensive special effects, James Cameron’s dedication to cutting-edge filmmaking technology, and the vastness of the world he’s created. Given Cameron’s plan for five Avatar movies – with two more scheduled for 2029 and 2031 – these high costs are a significant concern, and the future of the saga may be uncertain.
According to The Wrap, Disney is looking for ways to reduce the cost and length of the upcoming Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 films compared to the first three. Paul Dergarabediean of Comscore explained that movie ticket prices have changed significantly since 2009, and that a domestic opening weekend of $89 million and a worldwide total of nearly $1.5 billion wouldn’t necessarily be considered a failure, despite expectations.
The difference in box office numbers is key – ‘Fire and Ash’ earned about half as much as the original film. Plus, movie ticket prices have significantly increased since 2009. This is the standard James Cameron and the ‘Avatar’ movies now operate on. An $89 million opening weekend domestically and nearly $1.5 billion worldwide would now be considered a letdown, which creates that impression. Ultimately, these are good problems to have, indicating a massively successful franchise.
