Avatar 4 & 5 Will Continue This Important Franchise Tradition (And I’m So Relieved)

Fans can take heart as the “Avatar” series persists a significant trend within the franchise. In the upcoming period, moviegoers will revisit Pandora through “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, set to hit cinemas following a two-year break between films – significantly less than the over 10 years between the original “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water”. Yet, director James Cameron has no intentions of slowing down, with plans for at least two more films scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031.

Since the release of Avatar 3, James Cameron has been considering a new project outside the Avatar universe, marking his first non-Avatar feature film since 1997’s Titanic. This has sparked speculation among fans that the acclaimed director might be preparing to pass on his innovative sci-fi series to another filmmaker for the next two movies. However, Cameron himself has stated that this is not likely, at least as of now.

In a recent chat with Empire magazine, the director of Avatar expressed his intention to oversee both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, maintaining the tradition of James Cameron serving as the sole director for films within the Avatar series.

When queried about potentially sitting in the director’s chair once more for the 2029 and 2031 sequels (that are rumored to conclude the blockbuster film series), Cameron replied, “Well, I see no reason why not.

I mean, there’s no reason not to. I’m healthy, I’m good to go.”

He suggested that he must maintain his role with vitality, but acknowledged that due to his advanced age, he might be compelled to relinquish it.

I’m open to the possibility, but I need to approach it with a lot of effort to manage the intensity and workload for another six to seven years. It might be too much for me. Is that clearer?

Fans can find comfort in knowing that Cameron remains passionate about the Avatar franchise and has no plans to leave the project as long as his health permits.

2026 is when I’m expecting the wrap-up of Avatar 4 filming, following the December release of Avatar: Fire and Ash this year. The journey for these final Avatar movies began back in 2017, as we embarked on an interconnected production schedule for all four films simultaneously.

Avatar: Fire and Ash” (also known as “Avatar 3”) is the upcoming installment in the Avatar series, set to hit theaters on December 19. The film, helmed by the mastermind behind “Terminator 2” and “Titanic”, will continue the story of Sam Worthington’s character, Jake Sully, a human who inhabits an alien being called a Na’vi on the distant planet of Pandora.

Alongside Worthington in the upcoming cast of Avatar 3 are Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Britain Dalton, joined by others (find details on the cast for Avatar: Fire and Ash here).

Why James Cameron’s Avatar 4 and 5 Update Is a Big Deal

Learning that James Cameron intends to helm the last two installments of the Avatar series (Avatar 4 and Avatar 5) is undoubtedly the most exciting news fans could have received regarding the upcoming sequels.

It was never certain that Cameron would direct both films, considering his advanced age and the possibility that he might wish to explore other ventures. His return for parts 4 and 5 wasn’t a given.

It was speculated that the renowned Canadian filmmaker might assign the direction of ‘Avatar’ to someone else, similar to how George Lucas delegated the original Star Wars trilogy. In such a scenario, Cameron could have transferred the directorial responsibilities to another filmmaker while still preserving his vision for the story’s direction.

This report, nonetheless, firmly indicates that Cameron intends to take every necessary step to ensure that he will be the one to oversee the continuation of the Avatar series.

Since the director has been nurturing the concept for this revolutionary sci-fi series since the ’90s, it’s logical that he’d be in charge of steering it to completion.

Since about 2013, work has been ongoing for the Avatar sequels. This may provide James Cameron with an opportunity to delve into his next project or ideas that might arise during (or in-between) the production of the Avatar sequels.

There’s talk that the director might be planning an adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy novel, “The Devils.” Given that production on “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” is set to begin soon, with “Avatar 4” slated to complete filming next year, Cameron could use this new fantasy project as a break from the Avatar series before resuming work on “Avatar 5.
