With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash just around the corner, the movie’s impressive length has been announced. James Cameron‘s new film hits theaters on December 19, 2025 – almost three years after the huge success of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. That previous film already ran for a considerable three hours and twelve minutes.
AMC Theatres says the new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be three hours and fifteen minutes long. That’s only three minutes longer than The Way of Water, but it’s still the longest movie in the Avatar series so far.
The third Avatar movie will be quite long, clocking in at three hours and 15 minutes. That’s over half an hour longer than the first Avatar film, which ran for two hours and 42 minutes. Director James Cameron mentioned back in March 2025 that the new movie would be longer than The Way of Water, and now we know exactly how much longer it is.
| Movie | Runtime |
|---|---|
| Avatar (2009) | 2 hours 42 minutes |
| Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) | 3 hours 12 minutes |
| Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) | 3 hours 15 minutes |
At three hours and 15 minutes long, Avatar: Fire and Ash is now the same length as James Cameron’s longest film, Titanic. Titanic held that record for 28 years, but now Avatar is surpassing it in more ways than just box office success, taking the title of Cameron’s longest movie.
The Avatar movies are significantly longer than even Disney’s longest blockbusters, like Avengers: Endgame (over three hours) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (nearly three hours). Now that the Avatar series is getting more ambitious, it’s worth wondering if future installments will keep getting longer, or if they’ll stay around the same length as Avatar 3.
This PG-13 science fiction film is the third in a planned five-movie Avatar series. Disney has already scheduled the next installments for release on December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031. Although fans won’t have to wait as long as the 13 years between the first Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the movies are getting longer, which explains the spaced-out release dates.
Now that Avatar: Fire and Ash is confirmed to be the longest film in the Avatar series so far, people are wondering what other records the 2025 sequel might break. A major point of interest will be how much money the film makes, considering the original Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water are currently the highest- and third-highest-grossing films of all time, having earned $2.92 and $2.34 billion, respectively.
It’s too soon to know for sure how well Avatar 3 will do in theaters next month. Some believe it won’t match the success of the 2022 film, while others think it might even surpass it. While its longer running time is a potential concern, Avatar: Fire and Ash faces relatively little competition from other major blockbusters. The biggest releases around the same time include the adult-rated The Housemaid, the family-friendly The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, the drama Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet, and the action-comedy Anaconda with Jack Black and Paul Rudd.
