Avatar 3’s Most Important Character Will Surprise You

A key character in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water almost didn’t appear in the sequels, but Cameron ultimately decided to keep them in the story.

What Avatar 3 character did James Cameron nearly write out?

Avatar: The Way of Water features a new character, Miles “Spider” Socorro, played by Jack Champion. Spider was born on Pandora at the RDA base and is the son of Colonel Miles Quaritch. After his father’s death, Jake Sully and Neytiri adopted Spider and raised him as their own.

While making The Way of Water, James Cameron almost cut the character of Spider because he was proving difficult to work with. But Cameron realized he needed Spider to create more conflict between Jake and Quaritch.

James Cameron explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that filming a live-action actor alongside much larger performance-capture characters (like Spider) presented significant challenges. He admitted it was incredibly difficult, and he even tried to remove the character from the script, but it didn’t work. Removing Spider made the conflict between Jake and Quaritch too straightforward and diminished the story’s complexity.

Spider finds himself torn between two father figures: Jake, who raised him, and his biological father, Quaritch. His choice to save Quaritch in the last movie caused a lot of debate among fans. It’s a complicated situation for Spider – the man he now knows as his father is enemies with the family who adopted him. He’s also creating tension between Jake and Quaritch, as both men are determined to protect him.

From what I understand, a big part of the story revolves around Spider, Jake’s son, and how he connects both Jake and Quaritch. Quaritch is really struggling with who he is now, especially since he’s carrying the memories of someone else, and being a father to Spider is becoming a key part of that. But Spider doesn’t want to see Quaritch, who the Na’vi consider an enemy, as his dad. It’s going to be fascinating to see how that relationship plays out in the next movie, because it actually forces Jake and Quaritch to work together, even though they’re supposed to be enemies.

As a critic, I’m really looking forward to seeing how Spider develops as a character in Avatar: Fire and Ash, hitting theaters December 19th, 2025. It promises to be a fascinating look at his journey.
