We now know the official runtime for Avatar 3, the third film in 20th Century Studios’ Avatar series. The highly anticipated sequel to 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.
What is the runtime for Avatar 3?
During a recent conversation with Variety, director James Cameron revealed that the next Avatar: Fire and Ash film will be approximately three hours long while talking about Jake Sully’s return as Toruk. This news isn’t unexpected, considering the previous 2022 sequel also ran for 3 hours and 12 minutes.
I have some exciting news. This element wasn’t in the original script, Fire and Ash. I immediately thought, ‘He needs to go get the bird!’ Honestly, I was planning to save it for a future movie. I thought, ‘Forget that! He should definitely get the bird – the Toruk.’ There’s something about Jake’s journey that makes it essential, doesn’t there? So, I rewrote those parts, and we filmed a couple of extra scenes to build around that idea, replacing some earlier material with it,” Cameron explained. “And now the film is three hours long – no surprise there! But it really works, and the actors were thrilled with the change. It just felt right, you know?”
I’ve got some interesting news from Cameron himself! He let us know that Avatar 3 is really coming along. They’re currently in the final stages of completing all the visual effects – which, let’s be honest, are a huge part of what makes these films so incredible. It sounds like we’re getting closer and closer to seeing the next chapter! You can find more details here.
We’re in the final stages of finishing the visual effects for Fire and Ash – we’ve been working on them for about two years now, and we’re really nearing completion,” he explained. “I want the music to feel consistent with the overall themes, especially how it’s used during conversations and other scenes. So, I’ve rewatched the film. It’s actually quite good, I must admit!”
As a huge movie fan, I’m so excited about Avatar: Fire and Ash! It’s fantastic that James Cameron is back directing, and he even co-wrote the script this time with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The cast is incredible – we’re getting back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet, plus new faces like Cliff Curtis, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, and Edie Falco. I remember Cameron mentioning that this sequel will really dive into new Na’vi cultures – specifically, a people he calls the ‘Ash People’ who represent fire. He wants to show us a different side of the Na’vi, because so far we’ve mostly seen their heroic qualities. It sounds like he’s aiming for a more complex and nuanced portrayal, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it. You can find more information here.
