Avatar 3 Movie Designer Admits to Mistake With New Fire Na’vi Body Part (Photo)

The production designer for James Cameron’s upcoming film Avatar 3, Dylan Cole, admitted to making an error in some recently unveiled artwork depicting the movie’s Fire Na’vi characters. The anticipated third installment of Avatar, titled Fire and Ash, is slated to hit theaters later this year, carrying on the epic sci-fi saga centered around an alien conflict on the distant planet of Pandora.

A significant part of Cameron’s ongoing Pandoran saga will unveil fresh Na’vi tribes, one being the elusive Ash people – fiery Na’vi who inhabit the volcanic zones of Pandora. Interestingly, the fire Na’vi were recently spotlighted in a piece of movie art, with its creator confessing that a noticeable mistake can be found if viewers carefully scrutinize it.

In an interview on X, Avatar 3’s production designer, Dylan Cole, admitted he might have made a small error while creating the artwork featured on the latest Empire Magazine cover for the movie.

Upon unveiling the latest cover design, enthusiasts promptly noted that the depiction of the primary Na’vi figure includes a hand with five fingers fully formed – a characteristic exclusive to human-Na’vi Avatars within the franchise’s narrative.

User Artomiss inquired of Cole if it’s correct that the Na’vi standing near Varang has four fingers instead of the usual three, implying that it would be unusual for this new tribe to have a human-like being within them.

Could you clarify if the Na’vi character standing near Varang is intended to have four or three fingers? I find it intriguing if she accepts outcasts with additional digits, but if they are not meant to have an extra digit and are pure Na’vi, that’s fine too. I was just curious to know for certain.

In my latest movie review, I must confess that I inadvertently caused a stir when promoting the upcoming “Avatar 3”. You see, in the promotional artwork, there appeared an image of one of the Na’vi characters holding their hands in a peculiar way. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that this was an oversight on my part – or rather, on the part of our talented artist. It seems he accidentally used his own hand as a reference for the digital Na’vi character and forgot to erase one finger from the image. Thus, the confusing hand gesture found its way onto our promotional material. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused, and rest assured that we are taking measures to ensure such mistakes do not happen again in the future.

In simpler, more casual terms: “Regarding all the discussions about the hand with only four fingers, well, let’s be honest here – it was an accident on my part. I accidentally shot my own hand as a reference and somehow missed painting out one of the fingers in the process.

In the ‘Avatar’ series, the unique human Avatars, who are essentially humans controlling genetically engineered Na’vi bodies, possess four fingers including a thumb. On the other hand, naturally born Na’vi characters, such as Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri, only have three digits with a thumb.

Titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” this movie hits theaters on December 19th. It marks the third installment in the sprawling sci-fi series from director James Cameron, known for his work on “Terminator.” In this film, we rejoin Sam Worthington’s character Jake Sully and his kin on the distant world of Pandora. A year following the occurrences in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the destiny of the Sully Clan is irrevocably altered as they engage with a new hostile Na’vi tribe, drawing them into a sprawling conflict that threatens to engulf the entire planet.

Why The Fire Na’vi Would Never Allow an Avatar Among Them

Viewing the latest artwork of “Avatar 3,” certain enthusiasts pondered over the reason why the new Ash People (also known as the fire Na’vi) have accepted a fully-formed Avatar with five fingers in their midst.

According to production designer Dylan Cole, it seems unlikely that the alien character with four visible fingers was intentionally included among the Na’vi-human hybrid characters, or Avatars. Instead, this might have been an unintentional error. For the sake of accuracy, it appears best that there is now only a human-Na’vi Avatar present.

In the recently released film, the Na’vi fire clans are often depicted as antagonists. However, director James Cameron intends to portray them differently, offering a new perspective, to emphasize their ruthless and intimidating nature similar to that of Quaritch’s military forces and the RDA in the initial two movies.

It certainly sounds like they would not be open to having a human Avatar in their community.

It’s been circulating that the Ash People might align with the once-villainous Quartich, who has taken on an Avatar form, in the upcoming movie. This potential alliance could involve them breaking through the barrier of not working with outsiders.

Maybe the antagonist from Steven Lang’s Avatar, will propose a kind of trade agreement to the red-skinned Na’vi characters, encouraging them to unite against Jake Sully and his extended family, as they both move forward with plans to confront each other.
