Many films, like The Karate Kid, feature a climactic martial arts tournament where the hero demonstrates everything they’ve learned. However, some movies make the competition the central focus, showing multiple rounds and highlighting the different fighters, while also developing a separate storyline outside of the arena.
The series Rivals takes place in 1986 and centers on the intense rivalry between politician Rupert Campbell-Black and television executive Tony Baddingham, who both work at the independent broadcaster, Corinium Television. As their conflict grows, Tony brings in a new producer and convinces popular BBC broadcaster Declan O’Hara to join his team.
Despite being remembered as a major cinematic failure, especially with the low ratings of later films, the original story of the Divergent series is actually very strong. The flawed way the studio made the films hid a genuinely exciting thriller that deserves to be appreciated.
As a big fan of shows about the supernatural, I was bummed to hear the Buffy reboot isn’t happening on Hulu. That really leaves Supernatural as the king of the genre, and honestly, I’m expecting more episodes eventually. It’s a tough line to walk, though – dealing with demons and ghosts can easily feel cheesy, but you need to take the scares seriously for the story to matter. Shows like Supernatural and Buffy were so good because they mastered that balance – they knew how to be fun and silly while still making you care about what happened to the characters.
The latest issue of Captain America (#11, from creators Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Joe Caramagna) sees Steve Rogers and his team racing to save a young clone of Doctor Doom. Their rescue mission hits a snag when General Thunderbolt Ross and his forces unexpectedly arrive. Despite the interruption, Captain America manages to save the boy, though his bravery leads to a shocking turn of events – Steve Rogers finds himself in Hell.
Netflix has become the leading platform for excellent anthology series. They famously rescued Black Mirror from Channel 4, transforming it into a worldwide hit. More recently, they gave Guillermo del Toro free rein to create his horror anthology, Cabinet of Curiosities, inspired by the classic Night Gallery.
Currently, The Equalizer is the 7th most popular movie on Prime Video in the US. Meanwhile, the Prime Video original movie No Place To Be Single is doing very well internationally, ranking as the 2nd most-watched movie on Prime Video worldwide. This means Prime Video subscribers had a good selection of movies to choose from this past weekend.
I’ve watched the anime and seen so many Pokémon appear over the years – hundreds, actually! A lot of longtime fans probably think Ash’s Pikachu is the most powerful, and it’s true Pikachu is strong. But I’ve noticed several Pokémon that have really shown even greater strength. While we don’t see these incredibly powerful Pokémon all the time, they definitely stand out and set a high standard for power when they do appear.
After achieving incredible success with 10 Oscar nominations for a single film, Scorsese immediately jumped into new projects – documentaries, commercials, producing, and acting. He’s also known for openly sharing his thoughts about the film and TV industry, famously speaking out against the dominance of superhero movies in 2019.
Sanderson gave fans an update on his live-action projects, saying that the Mistborn adaptation is currently the main focus. However, they plan to move directly into filming a pilot episode for The Stormlight Archive after that.
