As A Theme Park Fan, I Think There’s One Intriguing DC Wrinkle If Universal And Warner Bros. Were To Merge

The entertainment industry has seen a lot of changes recently. Disney acquired Fox, then Discovery merged with Warner Bros., and just this year, Skydance bought Paramount. Now, Warner Bros. is potentially up for sale again, with Paramount initially making an offer that was turned down. However, another company might be interested in buying it.

Reuters reports that Comcast, which owns Universal Pictures, is considering a bid for Warner Bros. While another big merger in Hollywood could hurt consumers, one area that would become particularly noteworthy is theme parks. This potential deal also has an interesting angle related to superhero franchises.

Could Universal Orlando Resort Replace Marvel With DC If A Merger Happens?

Recent media company mergers have created a confusing situation with theme park licenses. For example, Disney owns Marvel, but Universal Studios has the rights to use Marvel characters in its Florida theme parks. Similarly, even though Disney now owns 20th Century Fox, which includes The Simpsons, Universal still controls the theme park rights for that property.

There’s a lot of speculation about Disney potentially regaining full control of Marvel characters. Currently, Disney is restricted in which Marvel characters they can use at its theme parks because of a past agreement. However, if Universal were to acquire Warner Bros., it’s possible they might be willing to let Disney have those Marvel rights back.

If Universal acquires Warner Bros., it would also gain ownership of DC Comics, giving them a valuable collection of superhero characters to develop. Currently, Six Flags has the rights to create theme park attractions based on DC properties, which could create complications. However, a Universal-owned DC would likely be very interested in bringing those characters to its own theme parks.

Some people believe that even if Universal didn’t plan to swap Marvel Super Hero Island for a DC one, they might still choose to give up the rights to Marvel. This is because Marvel is a direct competitor to DC, and Universal might prefer to focus on DC properties, even if securing those rights takes longer.

A Warner Bros. Purchase Would Make Things A Lot Easier For Universal Destinations & Experiences Biggest franchise

As a big theme park fan, I’ve been thinking about why Universal might want to buy Warner Bros., and it hit me – it’s about the money they’re currently spending on licensing! Universal already has rights to use certain Warner Bros. properties in their parks, but they have to pay for those rights. If they owned Warner Bros. outright, they’d stop having to pay those fees, which would be a huge win for them.

In my opinion, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the most popular attraction at Universal’s theme parks. Because Universal currently licenses the franchise from Warner Bros., buying the studio would allow them to fully control it. This would probably simplify future expansions, such as the one planned for the new Universal park in the UK.

It’s important to remember this is all just guessing at this point. We don’t know if Warner Bros. will actually be sold, and even if it is, it’s not guaranteed Universal would be able to buy it. They previously tried to acquire Fox when Disney bought it, but weren’t successful. However, if Universal were to acquire Warner Bros., it would definitely lead to significant changes for Universal’s theme parks and entertainment division.
