Following Glen Powell’s comments about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s thoughts on the upcoming 2025 remake of The Running Man, Schwarzenegger himself shared his opinions directly with Powell and director Edgar Wright. Schwarzenegger originally starred as Ben Richards in the 1987 film, based on the Stephen King story. While a popular action movie during his career, it didn’t receive widespread critical acclaim at the time. Despite now being a cult favorite, Schwarzenegger has said it’s the only one of his films he’s ever hoped to see remade.
Okay, I’m still buzzing about this! Arnold Schwarzenegger met the guys behind that awesome Running Man remake video – Powell and Wright – and it was so cool to see. He actually thanked them for making something so great! They all shared the video on Instagram, and Wright’s caption was perfect – he called it a ‘passing of batons’ and thanked Arnold for being so generous. But the best part? Arnold told them Running Man was the one movie he always wanted to see remade, and that it needed a fresh take! Then they presented him with this giant fake bill with his face on it – it was hilarious and such a sweet moment. Seriously, as a fan, it just felt really special to see him acknowledge their work like that.
I always hoped someone would remake ‘The Running Man,’ and this new version absolutely delivers. The action is incredible and really inventive – it’s truly fantastic.
Paramount Pictures is releasing a new film, The Running Man, in theaters nationwide on November 14th (with some countries seeing it slightly earlier). Directed by Wright and co-written with Michael Bacall, the movie stars Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Colman Domingo, Katy O’Brian, William H. Macy, Michael Cera, Jayme Lawson, Emilia Jones, and more. The story centers on Ben Richards, a contestant on a reality TV show who takes on a dangerous challenge: being hunted by expert killers. If he can survive, he’ll win a million dollars on the futuristic hit show.
Does ‘The Running Man’ Do Justice to Stephen King’s Original 1982 Novel?
The upcoming 2025 film, The Running Man, isn’t a remake—it’s a fresh take inspired by Stephen King’s novel (originally written under the name Richard Bachman). The book paints a disturbing picture of a future where Ben Richards battles a dishonest government. While the original story has a very dark ending, both previous movie versions changed it to be more appealing to audiences.
The 1987 film version of The Running Man borrows some plot points from Stephen King’s novel and focuses on the core idea of a dangerous game show. However, it largely ignores the deeper, darker themes that made the book a bleak commentary on the future. Those themes feel especially important today, and the 2025 adaptation, directed by Wright, makes sure to include them. While still a fast-paced action movie starring a major action hero, this new version of The Running Man stays truer to the spirit of King’s original story.
