Armageddon Tops Tubi Streaming Charts 28 Years Later

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Armageddon is now the most popular title on Tubi in the United States. This is great news for the film, which is still attracting viewers nearly 30 years after it first came out. Armageddon was a huge hit when it was released in 1998, bringing in over $553 million worldwide. That’s equivalent to more than $1 billion today if adjusted for inflation, meaning it would perform even better if released in 2026.

Critics Were Not Very Kind to Armageddon

It currently has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which the site considers “rotten.” While many acknowledged the film’s impressive visuals, reviewers generally found it lacking in substance, comparing its intelligence to the asteroid it features. The late critic Roger Ebert famously included Armageddon on his list of most disliked films, describing it as overwhelming and unpleasant to watch.

Despite its flaws, many movie fans simply enjoyed the film as a fun, over-the-top action movie. Like many films by Michael Bay, it was made to be a big, exciting blockbuster with stunning visuals and appeal to a wide audience. That’s why it featured a cast of likable actors and memorable lines. Interestingly, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 73%, indicating that general moviegoers liked Armageddon far more than critics did.

In Michael Bay’s Armageddon, a massive asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. NASA recruits a team of experienced oil drillers, led by Harry Stamper, for an intense, quick training program to become astronauts. Their mission: travel into space and destroy the asteroid before it hits. Among the team is A.J. Frost, a new driller who is also dating Harry’s daughter, Grace (Liv Tyler). The film also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Steve Buscemi, Owen Wilson, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Keith David.

Ben Affleck Questioned the Story During Production

Affleck himself acknowledged the plot wasn’t very logical. He recalled asking director Michael Bay why it seemed simpler to train oil workers for space travel than to train astronauts to work on oil rigs. Bay reportedly told him the idea was to avoid overthinking things.

“He told me to shut the f*** up, so that was the end of that talk,” Affleck said.
