Ian McKellen, who is likely to reprise his role as Gandalf, recently discussed the possibility of working again with Viggo Mortensen, his co-star from The Lord of the Rings.
McKellen didn’t directly answer whether Viggo Mortensen might return, but he did offer a glimpse into the new film’s plot. He explained, “I can’t say for sure, but the script is made for fans of The Lord of the Rings. It’s an adventure where Aragorn searches for Gollum, with Gandalf providing guidance.”
Ian McKellen’s remarks suggest Gandalf will have a less prominent role than Aragorn in the movie. While Aragorn will be actively fighting, Gandalf will primarily be a support figure, likely researching the One Ring. This happens between Bilbo’s birthday party and when Gandalf advises Frodo to leave the Shire, as shown in The Fellowship of the Ring.
It makes sense that Aragorn appears in the film, as it’s based on details from the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. These details explain that Gandalf asked Aragorn to help find Gollum, believing he held important information that needed to be kept from Sauron. However, as Gandalf later tells Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring, their search was unsuccessful; they only found Gollum after he had already escaped from Mordor.
Aragorn Could Be the Future of The Lord of the Rings Film Franchise
It’s interesting that Aragorn seems to be emerging as the main character, or at least the central figure from the hero’s point of view – the film will likely focus on him. This is a new development, especially considering previous reports suggested something different.
The significant attention given to Aragorn, including the potential for a new actor to portray him, suggests where the Lord of the Rings films might be headed. The source material, like the appendices used for The Hunt for Gollum, reveals many unrecorded adventures Aragorn had after leaving Rivendell – particularly his heroic acts in Rohan, which are hinted at in the original trilogy. These stories could easily be developed into future films or even a Lord of the Rings series on HBO Max.
Filming for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum starts in New Zealand in May. The movie is expected to come out in theaters on December 17, 2027.
