Apple’s New Mystery Show Starring Harry Potter Alum Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

Harry Potter alumnus Emma Thompson is enjoying critical success in a new mystery series on Apple TV.

Thompson’s new show, Down Cemetery Road, starts on October 29th and is currently getting good reviews. It launched on Rotten Tomatoes with a 75% fresh rating, though this is based on only 8 reviews so far, meaning the score could change.

The show features Thompson as Zoë Boehm, a private investigator from a series of four novels by Mick Herron. In this story, she’s hired by Sarah Tucker (played by Ruth Wilson), a worried mother whose neighbor’s child disappears the same night as a strange explosion.

Mick Herron’s popular “Slough House” novels, including “Down Cemetery Road,” are the inspiration for the Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses,” which recently concluded its fifth season.

ScreenRant’s review highly recommends the show, particularly its actors and script. The review highlights that the story unfolds at a perfect pace, building tension effectively without feeling hurried or skipping important details.

Many positive reviews praised the chemistry between the two lead actors, Thompson and Wilson, with one reviewer calling them “outstanding.” While some critics appreciated the show’s complex plot, others weren’t fully convinced by its thriller elements.

Despite generally positive reviews, Down Cemetery Road’s Rotten Tomatoes score is currently at 75% due to a small number of negative critiques. Some critics find the show unoriginal and overly sentimental, while a few particularly harsh reviews claim it pushes a feminist agenda in a heavy-handed way.

Some critics find the show preachy, but others enjoy it despite a plot that can be confusing at times.

With Oscar-winner Thompson’s thriller, Dead of Winter, now available to stream, fans have another new project to enjoy: Down Cemetery Road. Thompson is joined by Wilson, a well-known actress from TV shows like The Affair, Luther, and His Dark Materials.

Whether Down Cemetery Road will become as popular as other shows based on Zoë Boehm’s books remains to be seen, but Apple TV+ is hoping it will be another big success like Slow Horses. They’re planning to adapt more of Herron’s work, as he’s the creator behind the popular character Jackson Lamb.

The TV series Slow Horses has plenty of source material to draw from, with twelve books in the Slough House series. However, any potential spin-offs based on the Down Cemetery Road novels will be more restricted, as there are only four books featuring Zoë Boehm.

You can now watch the first two episodes of Down Cemetery Road on Apple TV. New episodes will be released every Wednesday.
