Apple TV+ has quickly earned a reputation for consistently high-quality shows and movies. Early in the streaming era, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were clearly the leaders, while other services struggled to compete. However, both Netflix and Prime began releasing a lot of content, with varying degrees of success – even cancelling promising shows prematurely. This created an opportunity for services like Apple TV+ to step up and establish themselves as major players.
Paramount+ is the home of the Yellowstone franchise. Disney+ offers a variety of Star Wars series, with varying degrees of success. HBO Max features classic HBO shows like The Sopranos and Game of Thrones, while Hulu streams popular FX series such as The Bear and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. However, many would agree that Apple TV consistently delivers high-quality original programming.
Apple has become a major player in science fiction, creating compelling shows like Severance and Pluribus. They’ve also found huge success in comedy, with both feel-good shows such as Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest, and edgier, more satirical comedies like The Studio. The Studio has produced particularly dark and clever series, including Bad Monkey, Murderbot, and a hidden gem called Your Friends and Neighbors.
Your Friends & Neighbors Is A Twisted Crime Caper
In the new series Your Friends and Neighbors, Jon Hamm plays Coop, a New York financial manager who suddenly loses both his job and his wife. Facing divorce and unemployment, he tries to reduce expenses, but his children refuse to give up their comfortable lifestyle. Desperate to maintain their standard of living without income, Coop starts robbing his wealthy neighbors.
The show starts with a clever and biting idea, perfectly lampooning the ultra-rich. It playfully criticizes wealthy individuals who are never content and constantly seek more, and exposes the ruthless competition among elites to accumulate even greater fortunes. It also reveals how fragile the polite facade of the upper class truly is. The main character, Coop, appears to be friends with these people, but secretly, he’s stealing from them.
Your Friends & Neighbors Is Jon Hamm’s True Follow-Up To Mad Men
Jon Hamm became a major star thanks to his memorable performance as Don Draper in Mad Men. Along with shows like The Wire and Breaking Bad, Mad Men helped usher in a new era for television. It demonstrated that television could offer the same high-quality visuals, complex stories, and well-developed characters previously found only in films. The role of Don Draper allowed Hamm to showcase his range as an actor, portraying a flawed character with surprising depth and emotional resonance.
Since Mad Men concluded, Jon Hamm has appeared in several television series, including Fargo, Landman, Good Omens, and The Morning Show. However, Your Friends and Neighbors feels most like a spiritual successor to his iconic role. It provides Hamm with another complex and captivating antihero – Coop shares Don Draper’s flaws and charisma, making him equally compelling and morally questionable.
As a total film and TV buff, I was immediately reminded of Mad Men while watching Your Friends and Neighbors. Mad Men pulled back the curtain on the glamorous world of advertising in the 60s, revealing all the messy secrets – the cheating, the drinking, the unhappiness – hidden beneath the polished surface. Your Friends and Neighbors does something similar, but this time it’s set in the world of high finance. It follows a guy who loses his job and starts swindling his friends and neighbors to maintain his lifestyle. It’s a really compelling drama, but it’s also sharply funny and makes you think a lot about the divide between the rich and everyone else.
