Apple TV’s New Horror Show Is Bringing A Hollywood Genre Back From The Dead

Apple TV+’s new series, Widow’s Bay, aims to blend comedy with the horror genre. Apple TV+ is establishing itself as a top-tier streaming service, planning to release several highly anticipated original shows in 2025, including Pluribus, Chief of War, the second season of Severance, and other critically praised programs.

Apple TV has really stepped up its game in recent years. It used to be where shows went to quietly disappear, but now, if a series debuts on the platform, it’s usually a sign of quality. That’s why there’s a lot of anticipation for Widow’s Bay.

Widow’s Bay Is An Apple TV Horror Comedy Starring Matthew Rhys

Get ready for Widow’s Bay, a new horror-comedy coming to Apple TV on April 29, 2026! The show, which will have 10 episodes, stars Matthew Rhys – known from The Beast in Me and Perry Mason – as Tom Loftis, the mayor of a New England town. He ignores the warnings of his townsfolk, who believe the town is cursed.

Tom, the new mayor, is working to revitalize the town on the island, which currently lacks basic amenities like Wi-Fi in many areas. He hopes to transform it into a popular tourist destination, both to provide a brighter future for his son and to improve the town itself. The real challenge isn’t attracting visitors, but a mysterious curse that appears afterward.

Rhys will be joined in the new show—described as a mix of real horror and funny, relatable characters—by Stephen Root (known for Barry), Kate O’Flynn (My Lady Jane), Kingston Rumi Southwick (Presumed Innocent and The Leftovers), and Dale Dickey (Vice Principals), according to GoodHousekeeping.

We’ve been waiting for another great horror comedy TV show! Recently, we haven’t seen many truly funny horror shows. While there’s been plenty of horror on TV, the combination of horror and comedy felt like it was disappearing. Though not for everyone, humor and horror actually go hand-in-hand, and it’s great to see that connection returning.

What makes us laugh and what terrifies us are often surprisingly close. Shows like Widow’s Bay are a good indicator that horror is thriving, because they demonstrate an understanding that horror can also be funny.
