Apple TV has canceled The Last Frontier. The decision comes just a few weeks after the show’s first season ended.
The new Western-style show launched on October 10th with its first two episodes. It quickly became popular on the streaming service, staying at the top of the charts even with mixed reactions from critics.
The thriller took place in Alaska and centered around Jason Clark as Frank Remnick, a solitary U.S. marshal responsible for the remote and wild Alaskan wilderness.
When a plane carrying dangerous prisoners crashes in a remote area, Sheriff Remnick’s peaceful town is thrown into chaos as the inmates escape.
The story follows a man dedicated to protecting his town who starts to believe a recent crash wasn’t accidental. He fears it’s part of a larger, dangerous plot with serious consequences, according to the synopsis.
I really enjoyed The Last Frontier, and it wasn’t just Clarke who shined. Dominic Cooper played a fantastic role as a CIA operative who manages to break free while in custody, and there was another CIA agent in the mix with a really interesting secret that kept me guessing.
Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, and Alfre Woodard are also part of the cast. Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio developed the series and worked as executive producers, alongside Drew Clarke, Laura Benson, Glenn Kessler, Albert Kim, and director Sam Hargrave.
The Last Frontier Was a Hit Despite Poor Reviews
Since its debut on October 10th, the show has received mostly negative reviews. It currently has a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a “rotten” label. Critics agree that while the initial idea was promising, The Last Frontier loses steam and doesn’t fully develop its potential, dragging on for too long.
The reviewer acknowledged the show appears grand in concept, but ultimately feels familiar to thriller fans. While the scenery is beautiful and effectively creates a feeling of isolation – something the story relies on – “The Last Frontier” doesn’t really offer anything new to the genre.
Viewers generally agreed with the 50% rating for this neo-Western thriller. While critics liked the action and plot twists, they found the acting and dialogue less impressive.
Despite receiving some negative feedback, The Last Frontier remained popular and even climbed the charts. However, this success wasn’t enough to convince Apple TV to renew the show for another season.
The Last Frontier is streaming on Apple TV.
