Apple TV has canceled plans for a television series based on what was named the best book of 2024.
According to Variety, Apple has decided not to move forward with a television series based on Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s novel, Long Island Compromise. The project, which was originally in development with Apple, is now available for other studios or networks to pick up.
Even before the book came out, several TV studios were eager to turn it into a series, leading to a competitive bidding process. The author, Brodesser-Akner, intended to write the script and also serve as an executive producer, working with Richard Plepler and his production company, Eden Productions. Eden Productions had recently signed a five-year agreement with Apple TV in early 2020.
This book is the follow-up to Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s popular novel, Fleishman Is in Trouble, which became a Hulu miniseries in 2022. She also received an Emmy nomination for writing the screenplay.
I recently watched Long Island Compromise, and it’s a really interesting story. It centers around Carl Fletcher, a successful businessman who was kidnapped and held for ransom, but the film jumps forward in time – almost 40 years after it actually happened. What’s striking is how the family is still deeply affected by the event all these years later; it’s clear everyone has struggled to cope.
The book expands and includes details on the Fletcher family history and the official synopsis is:
Family is a complex mix of things: the weight of the past, hopes for the future, old beliefs, and the drive to succeed. It’s about feeling safe and secure, but also facing fears, dealing with ambition, and sometimes, just plain boredom. It encompasses everything from shared traditions and unspoken affection to the challenges of inheritance and navigating a changing world – a bond that ultimately connects generations.

The failed adaptation of Brodesser-Akner’s book isn’t unique. Back in 2021, when Sarah J. Maas’s popular and well-received A Court of Thorns and Roses series gained widespread attention, Hulu also began developing it into a show, but that project didn’t move forward either.
The adaptation has been canceled, but Sarah J. Maas plans to continue developing the project and explore other options for bringing it to life.
Book lovers have a lot to look forward to with upcoming movie and TV adaptations! This includes titles like A Night of the Seven Kingdoms, People We Meet on Vacation, and Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You, which just came out in theaters this month – though reviews have been somewhat mixed.
It’s currently unknown if another studio will take on the Long Island Compromise project, but because several studios initially competed for it, there’s a possibility someone could revive the adaptation of Brodesser-Akner’s novel for television after Apple decided not to move forward.
