Another Nintendo Exclusive Gets Switch 2 Version – But This One Doesn’t Make Sense

We’re currently in an awkward phase with gaming, as the Nintendo Switch 2 is still new and follows the original Switch. So far, only a handful of games are only available on the Switch 2, like the open-world racing game Mario Kart World and the platformer Donkey Kong Bananza. We’re also still getting updated versions of games that were originally released on the older Switch. There was an early announcement about an upgrade for Splatoon 3, but we’ve seen similar things happen before.

A rating for Splatoon 3 on a new Nintendo Switch 2 console recently appeared on PEGI (the rating was PEGI 7). This is a bit confusing because an update for Splatoon 3 already came out on the current Switch on June 12, 2025. Adding to the mystery, PEGI lists the release date as today, December 31, 2025. So far, however, no new version of Splatoon 3 has been released or even announced.

Splatoon 3 Rated For Switch 2 After Already Receiving Update In 2025

Because PEGI only provides age ratings, the announcement of a release date for Splatoon 3 on the new Switch 2 didn’t include any other details. Nintendo quietly revealed the Splatoon 3 upgrade through the new Nintendo Today app earlier this year, just two days before the update launched. This announcement also included news of Splatoon Raiders, a Switch 2 exclusive spin-off game that hasn’t had another trailer released since.

With the release of the new Switch 2, Splatoon 3 has been significantly improved. The game now runs smoothly at 60 frames per second, whether you’re playing online or in single-player, and the graphics are sharper in both docked and handheld modes. While mouse controls would be a nice addition, it’s unusual for a game to receive a performance upgrade and a completely new version.

Is A Splatoon 3 Re-Release Coming?

There’s a simple explanation for the recent update to Splatoon 3’s PEGI rating: it might just be an error. The date December 31, 2025, may have been used temporarily before the actual release date of June 12 was finalized, and then accidentally left unchanged. However, even listing a future date for a software update is unusual.

We’ll need to wait for Nintendo to officially announce if Splatoon 3 will be re-released. If it does happen, there are a couple of ways they could do it. The simplest would be just releasing the game on cartridges for the new Switch 2 console. Another possibility is a more complete version of Splatoon 3 for the Switch 2, including the Side Order expansion as part of the package.

We’ll probably hear about any future updates for Splatoon 3 during a Nintendo Direct presentation, which usually happens every February. However, the last Splatoon 3 news actually came through the Nintendo Today app, and this strange PEGI rating suggests there might not be any new announcements at all. Splatoon 3 recently received an update for the Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo hasn’t typically released multiple updates of that kind for a single game.
