Anime films are now major players in movie theaters. Just a month ago, Demon Slayer broke box office records with its opening weekend, and now another anime movie is topping the charts. While several new films came out this past weekend – including Regretting You and Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere – none could compete with the success of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.
The box office had some surprises over the weekend, leading to an unusual Top 10 list. See the chart below, and then let’s discuss what happened.

Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc Is The Latest Anime Title To Rule The Box Office
Let’s be upfront: ticket sales for Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc haven’t reached the levels of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. Following the successful releases of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in 2021 and Demon Slayer: To the Hashira Training in 2024, Infinity Castle had an exceptionally strong opening weekend in 2025. It broke records for anime releases domestically, and its $70.6 million in earnings still ranks among the top ten highest-grossing three-day openings this year – even surpassing the $64 million debut of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in late May.
That being said, the results are still noteworthy.
The new Chainsaw Man movie topped the box office this weekend, bringing in $17.3 million from over 3,000 theaters across the US and Canada, according to The Numbers. While it wasn’t a record-breaking opening (ranking as the 32nd largest debut of the year so far), it further demonstrates anime’s growing popularity in theaters.

The success of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc just keeps growing! After debuting in Japan last month, the film has been performing well internationally, and with $17.3 million earned domestically, it’s now passed $108 million worldwide. This milestone officially puts it in the $100 million-plus club for 2025.
Historically, movies released in the US and Canada tend to see a big drop in ticket sales after their opening weekend. Recent anime films have been particularly ‘frontloaded,’ meaning enthusiastic fans rush to see them right away, but they don’t generate enough positive buzz to keep audiences coming back. For example, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had a huge opening, but sales plummeted by 75% after just one week.
It doesn’t look like Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will change the current trend, especially with few new movies being released this weekend. However, it’s worth keeping an eye on its performance next Sunday.
Black Phone 2 Moves To Second Place With A Modest Weekend-To-Weekend Drop
While Black Phone 2 didn’t stay at number one after a strong opening weekend, it still performed well. The increasing popularity of anime in the US likely contributed to this, but Universal Pictures can be pleased that the horror movie held onto second place.
Over the past three days, Black Phone 2 earned $13 million domestically, bringing its total earnings in the region to $49.1 million. This represents a significant 52% increase from its $27.3 million earnings last week, indicating positive word-of-mouth among viewers. The timing also likely helped, as the film benefited from being released during the final weeks of the Halloween season when there weren’t many other major horror movies available, despite a promising year ahead for the genre.
As a movie fan, I’m really curious to see how Black Phone 2 does next weekend. Halloween falls right on Friday, and I’m wondering if that’ll give ticket sales a boost, or if everyone will be too caught up in trick-or-treating and parties to head to the theater. It’s a tricky situation, and I’m eager to find out!
Regretting You And Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere Settle For Places In The Top 5
Last weekend showcased the incredible range of stories movies can tell. The new releases were all very different from each other, but some clearly resonated with audiences more than others. While anime and horror films were the most popular, Regretting You and Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere didn’t quite reach the top five.
The new thriller Regretting You, starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames, earned $12.9 million over the weekend. That put it in second place in the Top 10, just behind Black Phone 2. While director Josh Boone’s previous film, the romantic drama The Fault In Our Stars (2014), was a huge success, earning $300 million globally, Regretting You is unlikely to reach that same level of popularity.
Despite Bruce Springsteen’s enduring popularity over many decades, the recent biopic about his life, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, didn’t become a major box office hit. Critics had mixed reactions, generally praising Jeremy Allen White’s performance but finding issues with the story itself. Better reviews might have led to a stronger opening weekend, as the film only earned $9.1 million in its first three days in theaters.
Okay, so the big question this week is: will the current top ten movies at the box office change with the release of Halloween and the wider release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia? I’ll be back next Sunday with my latest column here on TopMob to break down all the numbers and let you know exactly what happened!
