Anime Characters Even More Dangerous Than The Boys’ Homelander

Homelander is a dangerously self-absorbed character with powers similar to Superman. The final season of the gritty live-action show sees him completely succumb to delusions of grandeur, becoming increasingly violent and villainous. Antony Starr’s portrayal of this descent is captivating and disturbing.

Now that The Boys has finished its season, if you’re a fan of the show – especially Homelander – and are looking for something new to watch, check out this list of anime villains. These characters are just as powerful, cruel, and unsettling as Homelander, and they create the same mix of horror and fascination when they take action.

Gilgamesh Is a Sadistic “King of Heroes” in Fate

Gilgamesh, a character from the Fate series, wears golden armor and sees himself as superior to everyone. He firmly believes he’s the true king and owns everything, effectively claiming rule over all of humankind. Similar to Homelander, he has no problem being cruel to those he considers his “subjects” because he views them as inferior.

One of the most disturbing moments in Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works occurs when Gilgamesh defeats Illyasviel von Einzbern’s servant, Berserker. In a cruel act, Gilgamesh blinds Illya by slashing her eyes with his sword. He then kills her by piercing her heart, all without speaking a single word, finishing with a cold smirk.

Seryu’s Sense of Justice Requires Mutilating Her Enemies in Akame ga Kill

Seryu Ubiquitous from Akame ga Kill! shares similar beliefs about morality with Homelander from the first season of The Boys. Both characters see themselves as heroes and are fixated on delivering their own version of justice, regardless of the violence it takes. Seryu’s dedication to her ideals is reminiscent of Homelander’s conviction that he’s a true patriot, even though he’s responsible for many deaths.

In one scene, Seryu brutally cuts her living weapon in half, grinning and laughing maniacally as she justifies the violent act as righteous. She shows no remorse for Sheele’s death, and Homelander likely wouldn’t either.

Doflamingo Plays with Human Life for His Own Amusement in One Piece

Doflamingo from One Piece is a memorable villain driven by a desire for power and a total disregard for others. Like Homelander, he experienced trauma in his past, feeling devalued by those who held authority. This led both characters to believe they were justified in turning against the world for rejecting them.

In one tale, a pirate controls King Riku and his soldiers, forcing them to commit terrible acts against their own people. Unable to control their bodies, King Riku and his men are compelled to harm innocent citizens, including children. This causes King Riku immense suffering, and he desperately pleads for someone to end his life and stop the violence.

Aizen Feels Nothing for His Followers’ Total Love and Devotion in Bleach

It’s been a long time since fans have seen the Soul Society: The Rescue Arc of Bleach, so it’s easy to forget just how manipulative Sosuke Aizen was. As a reminder, he cleverly faked his own death. When his devoted lieutenant, Momo Hinamori, discovers he’s still alive, she rushes to him, overjoyed. She cares for Aizen so deeply that even his scent brings her comfort.

Just before fatally stabbing someone with his sword, the character’s villainous side is fully exposed. Similarly, in the final season of The Boys, Firecracker demonstrates unwavering loyalty to Homelander. She sacrifices everything for him—her religious beliefs and her relationship with the reverend who cared for her. Homelander responds to this complete devotion by brutally killing her—impaling her head on an eagle statue—showing that a follower’s love means nothing to him.

Griffith Betrays His Closest Allies for His Own Ambition in Berserk

In the final season of The Boys, Homelander is obsessed with achieving immortality through the V1 serum. He believes this will transform him into a god-like savior for humanity, and he’s prepared to kill anyone who stands in his way. He cruelly uses people who oppose him as test subjects for the serum, leading to their agonizing deaths, and shows absolutely no remorse for their suffering.

Driven by his ruthless goals, the hero callously betrays and sacrifices his entire army – including those who admire him most, like his close friend Guts. He views even his allies as expendable, similar to how Homelander coldly eliminates members of his own team, The Seven.

Esdeath’s Heart Is as Cold as Ice in Akame ga Kill

The anime Akame ga Kill! features some truly villainous characters, and two of them—Esdeath and Homelander—highlight just how dark the series can be. Esdeath, known as the “Ice Queen,” is a ruthless military leader who believes only the strongest should survive. Homelander shares this belief, convinced that people with superpowers are better than those without and should therefore be in charge.

I’ve been thinking about Akame ga Kill! and The Boys, and it’s striking how similar Esdeath and Homelander are. Esdeath is terrifying because she’ll just execute her own troops if they falter – she sees them as completely expendable. That’s exactly the kind of cold, ruthless behavior Homelander displays. Though, interestingly, Esdeath does have a softer side. She genuinely cares for and loves the people she’s closest to, which is a contrast to Homelander’s total lack of empathy.

Light Eradicates Humans at Light Speed in Death Note

Homelander is frightening because of his immense power and complete lack of compassion, but Light Yagami from Death Note is even more chilling. While Homelander uses his superhuman speed to physically kill, Light can end someone’s life instantly just by writing their name in his notebook, and imagining the cause of death.

The anime Death Note never states the exact number of people Light kills, but estimates suggest it’s more than 100,000. Like Homelander, Light starts believing he’s a heroic figure, eventually developing a god complex. Both characters maintain a public image of goodness while secretly and ruthlessly eliminating anyone who stands in their way.
