Following the success of Superman, DCU is developing a series focused on Jimmy Olsen, played by Skylar Gisondo. The show will explore the darker side of the DC Universe, investigating its villains, and comes from a creative team experienced in journalistic storytelling. This expands the “Superman Saga,” which already includes the upcoming Supergirl movie in June 2026 and Man of Tomorrow in July 2027. It’s great news for fans of Superman’s friend and photographer!
As reported by Deadline, the creators of the popular Netflix mockumentary American Vandal, Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, are developing a new series for DC titled DC Crime. The show will focus on Jimmy Olsen and other reporters at the Daily Planet as they investigate stories involving supervillains. James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers on the project.
In addition to the initial announcements, it’s been confirmed that the first season will focus on Gorilla Grodd, a recurring Flash villain. He previously appeared in the DC Universe as part of the Creature Commandos series, and was seen alongside Princess Ilyana Rostovic in a vision shown to Amanda Waller by Circe.
‘DC Crime’ Could be a Game Changer for the DCU

If the creators of American Vandal, Dan Perrault and Tony Tachenda, bring the same approach to DC Crime, audiences are in for something special. American Vandal was a hilarious Netflix series that playfully copied true-crime documentaries like Making a Murderer, but focused on silly high school problems – like a school-wide outbreak of diarrhea – and treated them as if they were serious crimes. The show was critically acclaimed, earning an Emmy nomination and a Peabody Award. Bringing this unique brand of comedy to the DC Universe is a great addition to their growing list of projects.
Though some viewers were unsure about a show focused on Jimmy Olsen, the character actually has a history in comic books. “Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen” was a spin-off series running from 1954 to 1973, lasting 163 issues. It’s particularly remembered as the place where artist Jack Kirby first introduced many of his New Gods characters, including the powerful DC villain Darkseid. While James Gunn has said Darkseid won’t appear in the DC Universe anytime soon, the upcoming DC Crime series could be a way to introduce the groundwork for future supervillains.
A series focused on Jimmy Olsen, tentatively titled DC Crime, could explore more of the Daily Planet’s staff beyond Clark Kent and Jimmy himself. Characters like Perry White, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, and Ron Troupe could have larger roles. Many viewers would likely be excited to see Sara Sampaio reprise her role as Eve Teschmacher, whose last scene with Jimmy hinted at a future relationship. The inclusion of Grodd also helps build out the DC Universe, introducing fantastical elements like talking animals and potentially showcasing Gorilla City, while also potentially setting up the future appearance of The Flash.
