The 1990s delivered some truly iconic action films, and 1991 was a particularly strong year. We saw hits like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Point Break, and The Last Boy Scout. But while those movies are often celebrated, there’s one I often think about that doesn’t get enough credit: Toy Soldiers.
Okay, so I just have to say, Toy Soldiers is seriously underrated! It’s this crazy action movie from back in the day starring Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton as a couple of mischievous boarding school students who end up in a hostage situation. It’s way more intense than you’d expect, and honestly, it doesn’t get nearly enough credit. Plus, the late Louis Gossett Jr. is fantastic in it. If you somehow haven’t seen it, you’re in luck – it’s currently streaming for free, and you really should check it out!

Move Over T2 And Point Break, Let’s Talk About Toy Soldiers
While Terminator 2 and Point Break are often more celebrated now, this action movie still holds up surprisingly well. Although Roger Ebert only gave it one star, he didn’t always get his reviews right.
Directed by Daniel Petrie Jr. – known for writing films like Beverly Hills Cop, Shoot to Kill, and Turner & Hootch – and scripted by David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park, this underrated thriller is a fun mix of action and clever ingenuity. It features intense moments, creative traps, and a determined group of kids who will stop at nothing to protect their school and friends – making for a truly exciting movie.
I can’t think of any other movie where Sean Astin has played such a tough and impressive character. William Tepper is simply a total badass.

My Brother And I Used To Watch This Like Every Weekend
Like a lot of people, my brother and I had a movie we watched constantly when we were kids. For us, it was Toy Soldiers, which we’d see on TNT all the time. I can’t remember if it was every weekend, but I have a lot of great memories of us lying around in his room – he got cable before I did! – late at night, watching college students pretend to fight terrorists, make silly jokes, and what I then believed was just brightly colored mouthwash, all while calling 1-900 numbers.
Watching the movie again recently was a fun trip down memory lane, though I was surprised by how much more violent and intense it was compared to how I remembered it from years ago.

Here’s How To Watch Toy Soldiers… For Free!
I was excited to see Toy Soldiers was available to stream, and I immediately told my brother. He hadn’t watched it in years! I’m not trying to promote anything, but I wanted to share that it’s currently free to watch on Tubi. You don’t even need to create an account or pay – just search for the movie and start watching. There are commercials, but it’s a great way to enjoy a nostalgic favorite, just like watching cable TV used to be.
- Stream Toy Soldiers on Tubi.
If you’re like me and love rediscovering hidden gems from the ’90s, you absolutely have to check out Toy Soldiers. It’s a seriously underrated movie that deserves another watch!
