Ten years after Lorelai and Rory Gilmore said goodbye on television, the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, is continuing to focus on family stories. She’s planning to adapt author Jennifer Weiner’s novel, The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits, into a new series that delves into the intricacies of family relationships.
Universal Studios has chosen Amy Sherman-Palladino to write and direct a movie based on the bestselling novel coming out in 2025. The studio won the rights to the book after a competitive bidding process. Sherman-Palladino will also be an executive producer on the film, titled The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits, alongside producer Stacey Sher, known for her work on Django Unchained and Erin Brockovich. This will be Sherman-Palladino’s first time directing a feature film.
Similar to Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Stars Hollow special, The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits is a deeply personal project, focusing on family as the title suggests.
The story now focuses on the complicated bond between sisters Cassie and Zoe Griffin, both former pop stars from the early 2000s. They’re dealing with the end of their music group and a long period of being distant from each other, having spent over twenty years out of the public eye. It’s currently unknown how closely the new adaptation will stick to the original bestselling book.
Jennifer Weiner’s latest novel, The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits, came out in April 2025 and was an instant hit. It quickly became a New York Times Best Seller and was also a Book of the Month selection. A paperback version will be available this June.
I recently discovered that the director of The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits isn’t new to movies! She actually wrote the novel In Her Shoes which was made into a film back in 2005. I remember seeing that one – it starred Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette as sisters dealing with family drama, especially their relationship with each other and their grandmother, who was brilliantly played by Shirley MacLaine.
Despite opening in third place, the movie In Her Shoes was a financial success, earning $83.6 million on a $35 million budget. Critics generally liked the film, as evidenced by its 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sherman-Palladino Has Remained Booked and Busy Since Gilmore Girls’ Final Installments
Before taking on the adaptation of this popular story, Sherman-Palladino has been busy with other projects. Since 2016, she created, wrote, and directed a series for Prime Video.
She won six Emmy Awards for her work on the show, including top honors for Outstanding Comedy Series, Directing, and Writing in 2018, just a year after the show first aired in 2017.
Recently, a funny and heartwarming show about ballet premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Although critics generally liked it – giving it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the series was unexpectedly canceled after just one season.
You can watch the original seven seasons of Gilmore Girls on either Netflix or Hulu. However, the revival series, Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, is only available on Netflix.
