These days, it’s hard to find a really good, long-running horror show that stays consistently scary and well-written. But one show that often gets overlooked is , a two-season thriller that successfully delivers the creepy atmosphere and relatable teenage experiences you’d find in a Stephen King story, even though it wasn’t actually written by him.
NOS4A2, which aired for two seasons from 2019 to 2020, features Ashleigh Cummings, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Jahkara Smith, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Zachary Quinto as the chilling villain, Charlie Manx. While it received a 72% rating from critics and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has become known as a fast-paced and visually striking horror series that’s easy to enjoy.
NOS4A2 Wasn’t Created by Stephen King, But it’s the Next Best Thing
It’s no surprise that NOS4A2 feels similar to Stephen King’s work – the show is based on a 2013 novel by King’s son, Joe Hill. Like his father, Hill is a talented horror writer, and he’s become well-known for stories like Locke & Key, Horns, and The Black Phone, which recently became a very popular horror movie.
The story centers on Vic McQueen, a woman with a unique ability to locate lost objects. Years after escaping the clutches of the terrifying Charlie Manx – a creature who devours souls – Vic now faces a desperate search to rescue her own daughter, who Manx has kidnapped. Manx is a sinister, vampire-like figure who preys on children, stealing their souls and taking what remains to his twisted, nightmarish world called Christmasland.
While the TV series doesn’t make the connections as clearly as the book, the story shares a universe with some of Stephen King’s most famous works. The book suggests that Christmasland exists in the same otherworldly dimension as other King creations, and even implies that Charlie Manx might be related to the terrifying creatures from Doctor Sleep.
The AMC series initially intended to continue the story beyond the source material, similar to what happened with Black Phone 2. However, the show was canceled after its second season. Despite this, the series successfully adapted the entire novel, providing a complete and well-made version of the story.
NOS4A2 Has One of the Best Villains in TV Horror
What really stands out about NOS4A2 is Zachary Quinto’s amazing portrayal of the villain. Though Quinto is well-known from his roles as young Spock in the Star Trek movies and on American Horror Story, he truly gets to showcase his talent as a bad guy in NOS4A2.
Quinto portrays both the older and younger versions of Manx, a character who sustains his youth and power by feeding on children’s souls. Manx is cruel and manipulative, lacking empathy, and these traits trap his victims within a disturbing, imaginary Christmasland he creates. The character is further enriched by a deeply unsettling and traumatic past.
Like classic villains in literature and horror, Randall Flagg (Manx) has a car that perfectly reflects his personality: a sleek, black 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith. This car isn’t just a vehicle for his crimes; it’s almost a part of him, with any damage to the car affecting Manx himself. Similar to Dracula’s hearse or Stephen King’s Christine, the Wraith enhances the unsettling nature of Manx’s character.
Both seasons of AMC’s NOS4A2 are available to stream on Netflix.
