Amazon’s God Of War Show Skips Original Games, Focuses On 2018 Reboot

The upcoming Amazon television series based on God of War will focus on the newer installments of the game, rather than the original titles. Following the success of video game adaptations like The Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane, the show is generating interest in which parts of the game’s extensive story it will cover.

The original God of War game was released in 2005, and it featured Kratos, a Spartan warrior who rises to become a god and spends several games defeating various gods and creatures. In 2018, the series was reimagined with a new storyline, and the upcoming Amazon show appears to be based on this newer version.

Amazon’s God Of War Will Be Based On The 2018 Game

The upcoming God of War series on Amazon will be based on the 2018 God of War game, though it shares the same title as the original 2005 game. Despite the similar names, the stories are quite different. The 2018 game, and its sequel God of War Ragnarök released in 2022, are set many years after the events of the earlier God of War games inspired by Greek mythology.

These new games feature an older Kratos – now with a son and a beard – who is trying to leave his violent past behind. However, that’s difficult in his new home, a land filled with the fierce gods and creatures of Norse mythology. Kratos and his son, Atreus, embark on a journey to uncover the truth about Atreus’s origins and prevent the end of the world, known as Ragnarök.

Why God Of War Won’t Cover The First Three Games

Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner for the God of War series, faced a difficult choice: which games should the show be based on? He ultimately decided on the Norse saga, explaining that the 2018 God of War game had a particularly compelling story with plenty of material to work with. “When I started watching it, and putting the cutscenes together, I realized just how much content there was,” he said.

He explained that he was drawn to the emotional story about a father and son, and found it unique. He noted that the games based on Greek mythology feel more like fast-paced arcade games, while the Norse games feature longer, more detailed scenes and develop Kratos’ personality further. Despite this, Moore hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the older Greek-themed games returning to the series, according to IGN.

Will Amazon’s God Of War Live Up To The Game?

It used to be that video game adaptations were rarely good, but things are changing. We’re now seeing a lot of successful adaptations, like Amazon’s Fallout series which premiered in 2024. So, it’s reasonable to expect that a God of War TV show could be really well-made.

It’s a challenge to live up to the quality of the God of War games. The God of War series is widely considered one of the greatest video game franchises ever made, so Amazon’s new show will really need to impress both newcomers and longtime fans.
