The success of a recent two-part fantasy series on Prime Video suggests their upcoming adaptation of “Fourth Wing” has a good chance of being well-received.
Prime Video has been working hard to become a major player in the fantasy genre, but progress has been uneven – for every success, there seem to be setbacks. The upcoming series based on Fourth Wing offers a real opportunity for Prime Video to finally establish itself as a leader in fantasy storytelling.
Although it’s still too early to say for sure if Prime Video’s Fourth Wing series will be good, another fantasy show on the platform demonstrates the streaming service can create a captivating TV adaptation.
Rings Of Power Proves That Amazon Can Handle Visually Stunning Fantasy Series
With a massive budget, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a visually stunning fantasy series. Prime Video’s investment is clear in its breathtaking depiction of Middle-earth, showcasing its expansive landscapes and diverse regions. The show pays close attention to detail in its production design, bringing places like the island kingdom of Númenor and the dwarf-city of Khazad-dûm to life with remarkable accuracy.
Sources indicate that The Rings of Power was filmed using high-end ARRI ALEXA Mini LF and LF cameras, typically used for movies meant for the big screen. This decision in itself gave the series a more cinematic look than many other TV adaptations.
Unlike some recent fantasy shows that use mostly computer-generated creatures, this series brought back the classic approach of using detailed costumes, make-up, and physical props. To create a truly captivating world, the show also built real sets for locations like Númenor and the Southlands, aiming for the same immersive feel as Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films.
Prime Video clearly invested heavily in making the show visually stunning and a fitting successor to Peter Jackson’s films. This commitment to creating a grand, cinematic fantasy experience for streaming viewers demonstrates their ability to produce other ambitious fantasy series.

Amazon’s Wheel of Time series was a big undertaking, but it unfortunately lost viewers and was canceled just as it was starting to hit its stride. The Rings of Power also saw a drop in viewership during its second season, suggesting it wasn’t as popular with audiences as hoped.
Prime Video has a chance to become a major player in fantasy with its new series based on Fourth Wing. By taking lessons from the successes of The Rings of Power and avoiding the pitfalls of Wheel of Time, they can finally build a strong fantasy franchise.
These fantasy series are excellent preparation for Prime Video as they begin adapting Fourth Wing. While Fourth Wing has a different scope and feel, it will need the same dedication to long-term storytelling. If Prime Video succeeds, Fourth Wing has the potential to become a flagship series for the genre on the platform.

Visually adapting Fourth Wing will be challenging, mainly because the story relies so much on its dragons. However, if Prime Video puts significant effort into creating realistic-looking dragons, the show could have even better visuals than HBO’s House of the Dragon. Also, Fourth Wing leans more into the ‘romantasy’ genre – a blend of romance and fantasy – than Prime Video’s past fantasy series.
This helps the show connect with the large communities on BookTok and Bookstagram, giving it a level of popularity that other fantasy series with complex storylines, like The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, haven’t been able to reach.
It’s still too early to know if Prime Video’s Fourth Wing will become as popular as Game of Thrones, but it definitely shows a lot of promise.
