If you loved Game of Thrones and are looking for another sprawling, complex story, check out The Expanse. Based on the book series by James S.A. Corey (Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham), it ran for six seasons. Originally airing on SyFy for three seasons, it was thankfully continued on Prime Video for the remaining three. With no weak episodes in the whole series, it’s great that The Expanse got the chance to finish its story.
Ever since Game of Thrones finished in 2019, viewers have been searching for a new show that can truly captivate them with compelling characters, immersive worlds, and plenty of discussion-worthy moments. And let’s be real, the ending of Game of Thrones is something we’ll likely be debating for years to come! Although Amazon Prime Video offers many original series, one stands out as particularly appealing to fans of GoT.
Why ‘The Expanse’ Is Perfect for ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans

Amazon Studios
As a sci-fi fan, I went into The Expanse expecting something different than Game of Thrones, given one’s rooted in space and the other in fantasy. But what surprised me is how much they actually have in common. Both shows are just incredibly gripping – they pull you in right from the start. And because they both run for multiple seasons, they really have the space to build complex plots and characters you genuinely care about. It’s a testament to good storytelling when different genres can hit the same high notes, and both of these shows definitely do.
As a huge book and TV fan, I think The Expanse is fantastic, especially if you loved seeing a book series brought to life on screen. Game of Thrones did a pretty amazing job with George R.R. Martin’s novels, even though they weren’t a perfect match to the books. I get that book fans always have ideas about how things should be, and it’s tough to translate a story exactly. But honestly, Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon – who could forget that huge Jon Snow moment or the shocking Red Wedding? It really left its mark, and I think that’s a sign of a great adaptation.
The sci-fi series, The Expanse, is set in a future where humans have colonized the solar system. The story follows three main groups of people: those living in the asteroid belt (known as Belters), those on Mars, and those on Earth. Belters are often treated as a lower class and work difficult jobs. Through these characters, the show explores themes of poverty and social inequality.
I was completely hooked by both Game of Thrones and The Expanse, and I think fans of one will absolutely love the other. Both shows aren’t afraid to kill off characters and feature really complicated people struggling with the dangers of war. They really dig into big ideas like what causes conflict, how power works, and what it means to be brave and free. If you were captivated by the battles and tangled relationships in Game of Thrones, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in the conflicts between the different factions in The Expanse. But honestly, the biggest reason I think GoT fans will adore The Expanse is because it actually delivers a satisfying ending. We all know how frustrating it was to invest eight seasons in Game of Thrones only to feel like the finale just didn’t quite stick the landing!
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Expanse showrunner Naren Shankar explained how they decided on the story for the series finale. He said the decision felt natural because of the significant, almost 30-year, time jump between the sixth and seventh books, making it a fitting place to end the show.

If you’re looking for a great science fiction series, check out The Expanse. It’s a smart, satisfying story that avoids the frustrating endings some shows have – unlike Game of Thrones, where you might finish eight seasons and feel unsatisfied with how things turned out. Like the best space movies, The Expanse is both thrilling entertainment and a thought-provoking story about the big questions in life. Plus, the show creates an incredibly detailed and believable world.
