Amanda Rollins Is Finally Returns To SVU, But With A Catch For Olivia Benson

In the current season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU), the new Chief of Detectives, Kathryn Tynan, seems to be intentionally pushing Olivia Benson away. Just five episodes into the season, Tynan has already lured Detective Joe Velasco to San Diego with an appealing undercover job and has secretly placed Jake Griffin inside SVU as an informant.

Fortunately, Amanda Rollins is returning, after being unfairly transferred from the Intelligence Unit due to Tynan’s interference. While it’s great to have Rollins back for season 27 of SVU, Benson suspects this is all part of Tynan’s scheme to push her out of the show.

Over more than ten years, Rollins transformed from a troubled and reckless detective into a thoughtful and compassionate sergeant – a remarkably complete and believable character arc. Her relationship with Dominic Carisi beautifully reflected this personal growth.

A hidden connection that started in season 22 grew into a strong, loving relationship on SVU. Their simple wedding and the arrival of their baby in season 24 showed a lasting happiness they’d worked hard to achieve after facing many challenges.

When Rollins left SVU to try teaching at Fordham, it honestly left a huge hole in the team. They’ve had a lot of different detectives come and go since then, but it just hasn’t been the same. Seeing her get bored with academia and then come back to police work really showed me something – Rollins isn’t someone who can sit still. She needs the excitement, a real sense of purpose, and connecting with people to truly feel alive. It’s what she’s good at, you know?

When Rollins was promoted to Sergeant in the Intelligence Unit during season 26, it looked increasingly unlikely she would return to SVU. At Captain Cragen’s funeral in the season 27 premiere, she warned Benson that Tynan was untrustworthy and manipulative, treating people as if they were pawns in a game.

Benson is now short on staff and doesn’t know who she can rely on. At the same time, similar problems were unfolding at the Intelligence Unit, eventually leading Rollins to want to leave. While she thought about returning to teaching, Tynan recommended SVU, and Rollins admits she misses the job and her friends there.

Rollins discusses a potential return with Benson, and appears as a full member of the squad in the very next episode. It’s great to have Rollins back on SVU consistently, after her limited consulting role over the past few seasons.

The return of Benson and Rollins on SVU is exciting for both the characters and viewers, but it’s also filled with tension. They realize they’re being used by Chief Kathryn Tynan, who has openly stated her goal of combining the SVU units from all five New York City boroughs and wants Benson to lead this new, larger department.

Tynan presented the change as an opportunity for Benson to build on her achievements in Manhattan throughout the entire city, but portraying it as the peak of her career backfired. Benson isn’t looking to retire – and she’s astute enough to recognize when someone is trying to control the narrative.

Tynan’s actions seem to be part of a larger plan. He managed to get Velasco to leave, then placed Jake Griffin as a mole close to her, carefully undermining Benson’s position at Manhattan SVU and cutting her off from people she could trust.

Rollins’ return is both fascinating and raises some red flags. While it appears to be a welcome surprise – bringing back Benson’s dear friend and most reliable detective – both women suspect Tynan has a hidden agenda and wouldn’t act without a reason.

It’s unclear if she wants Benson to ultimately hand over Manhattan to Rollins, or if she’s just rearranging things to gain more power. While Benson and Rollins are happy to be working together again, they both suspect another change is on the way and that this is all part of a larger plan.

Why Rollins & Benson Have A Better Chance Of Outsmarting Tynan Together

The connection between Benson and Rollins has been one of the most powerful and lasting relationships on SVU. When Stabler left unexpectedly, Rollins stepped up and became Benson’s most reliable and long-term partner, successfully easing a difficult loss.

Benson supported Rollins through a difficult time when personal struggles threatened her career, encouraging her to face her addictions head-on. Rollins has since been a steady presence for Benson, offering unwavering friendship during Benson’s career advancements – like becoming captain – and personal milestones, such as adopting Noah, providing stability amidst the challenges of police work.

These two women share a powerful bond because they’ve both overcome difficult experiences with assault and are raising families while navigating a challenging world. They deeply understand each other’s struggles and resilience, creating a connection that is both personal and professional, and fundamentally human.

With Chief Tynan’s plans to reorganize SVU creating uncertainty, the strong working relationship between these two detectives is crucial. They both feel like they’re being used in some way, and while they don’t know the full extent of the plan yet, they’re in a good position to resist it.

Rollins’ past work with the Intelligence Unit and her husband Carisi’s knowledge from the DA’s office give them a significant edge. Their combined connections create a strong network of information, trust, and skills that Tynan likely didn’t fully consider.

No matter what challenges their boss throws at them, Benson and Rollins will tackle them together, as both friends and partners. They’re the best hope for keeping the SVU team strong and stopping Tynan from achieving his goals.
