‘All I Had To Do Was Tackle A Guy.’ The Painful Injury The Rookie’s Shawn Ashmore Suffered On Set

Fans are excited for the eighth season of The Rookie, which is set to premiere in 2026. The new season promises plenty of action and thrilling fight scenes, and will even feature some characters traveling abroad. Actor Shawn Ashmore, who plays Wesley Evers, shared that he was injured during filming while working on one of these intense scenes.

Fans of the show The Rookie know that Wes, despite being a lawyer, often finds himself in dangerous situations. Actor Shawn Ashmore recently revealed that he actually broke a rib while filming a fight scene a few seasons back. He shared this story during a The Rookie panel at Epic Cons Chicago 2 in 2024.

Let me tell you, things didn’t start smoothly on set. The mishap happened right on the first take, which immediately raised a red flag about how many retakes we’d be looking at. They’d even spent the previous day choreographing the whole sequence and rehearsing it with the actors. And this wasn’t some newbie to action – the actor has plenty of experience with these kinds of scenes! But as soon as ‘action’ was called, it all just…fell apart. Here’s how he described it:

All I needed to do was bump into the actor – it wasn’t even a full tackle, just a shove like you’d see in an action movie. On the first take, with all the adrenaline pumping, I ran at him and collided with him. I felt a sharp, shooting pain throughout my body and had to leave the set. Twelve hours later, after finishing filming for the day, I realized I was still hurting.

He confessed that when he collided with the man – who was around 5’6” and very muscular, weighing about 250 pounds – he immediately felt pain and suspected he’d bruised his ribs. The stunt coordinator agreed with this assessment, and no further action was taken.

Everyone had to finish filming the fight scene, and by lunchtime, Ashmore was really feeling the pain, but he still wouldn’t see a doctor. It wasn’t until five days later, when he finally complained enough that his wife insisted he go to the hospital. An X-ray then revealed he’d been filming with broken ribs the whole time.

It’s unclear which fight scene caused the injury, but actor Aaron Ashmore thought it happened during either the fourth or fifth season of the show. His co-star, Alyssa Diaz, specifically stated it was during Season 4. Fans with a Hulu subscription can rewatch those episodes and try to find the exact moment he broke his ribs – it sounds like it must have been really painful!

It’s impressive Ashmore endured the pain for five days. It’s difficult to say how much longer he would have waited to seek medical attention if his wife hadn’t been there to encourage him to go to the hospital, so it’s fortunate she was around.

It’s hard to predict what Season 8 will bring for Wesley and the challenges he’ll face. Hopefully, if Felixia Ashmore performs another physically demanding fight scene and gets injured, he’ll handle it with appropriate care. Working on The Rookie – which Nathan Fillion considers the best job of his career – always carries that risk, with intense action and fights for all the characters. At least Ashmore now has a memorable story about a particularly interesting fight sequence.
