Live-action Green Lanterns haven’t often appeared on screen, but DC Studios is aiming to change that with its new DC Universe. This effort has faced some criticism, particularly after the trailer for the upcoming “Lanterns” series was released, and fans got their first glimpse of what seems to be Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern costume.
The Green Lantern Corps are a team of intergalactic peacekeepers in the DC Universe who use powerful rings fueled by willpower. Their costumes are among the most iconic in all of DC Comics.
We’ve ranked the most recent live-action Green Lantern costumes, from the least impressive special effects to the freshest designs – and how well they match the comic books.
Green Lantern 2011 (Ryan Reynolds)
Even after 15 years, the worst superhero costume is still widely considered to be Ryan Reynolds’ outfit from the 2011 film Green Lantern. Rather than a real costume, the movie heavily used bad computer-generated imagery, resulting in a glowing, digital suit that looked more like a strange alien skin than a proper superhero uniform.
Aside from the unconvincing special effects, the suit itself looked strange – it had a veiny texture, an overly intricate mask, and oddly, no gloves or boots. Overall, the 2011 costume design felt too busy and fake, making it one of the least successful live-action versions we’ve seen.
The Snyderverse’s Green Lanterns (Yalan Gur/Kilowog/John Stewart)
As a big DC fan, I always knew Zack Snyder’s vision for the DCEU included a few different Green Lanterns. It’s a little frustrating though, because none of them really got a proper introduction or much screen time. One Lantern, in particular, was just…there, with absolutely no development at all. It felt like a missed opportunity, honestly.
As a huge cinema fan, I always get a kick out of the little details. During Wonder Woman’s flashback about Darkseid in Justice League, I spotted Yalan Gur – and his outfit was amazing! It felt so much older and more otherworldly than the typical Green Lantern uniform, but still really striking. It definitely hinted at a deeper history for the Corps.
Kilowog, who usually trains new Green Lanterns, had a very brief appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. He was only seen for a split second as a fallen body during Batman’s Knightmare scene. While his design looked like it came straight from the comics, the quick shot made it hard to get a good look at the details.
Zack Snyder shared a picture of a costume designed for Wayne T. Carr as Green Lantern John Stewart, and it looked quite good. However, since we didn’t see a complete version of the character on screen, both this costume and the other alien appearances in Snyder’s films remain interesting teasers, but not full, live-action versions of those characters.
Hal Jordan’s DCU Green Lantern (Kyle Chandler)
The new trailer for Lanterns gave fans their first glimpse of what appears to be Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern costume in the DC Universe, but it was shown in an unexpected manner – simply hanging on a clothing rack.
This confirms the suit is a workable idea, and it’s similar to how Green Lanterns used to wear physical uniforms in older comics. However, it differs from more recent versions where the uniform simply appears when the ring is activated. Still, there’s a history of Green Lanterns having suits in the comics.
The mostly brown color of the costume has caused a lot of discussion online, as many fans are surprised it doesn’t have more green for a Green Lantern suit. However, I think the absence of green in the show’s name and preview is deliberate, and we’ll likely see more of it as the series unfolds.
I understand the long-term goals and possibilities, so I’m not going to criticize the costume’s color based on just one picture. Even though the color is different than expected, the suit’s design itself is very similar to versions of the costume from the comics, especially the classic Hal Jordan look.
If the show eventually includes green coloring, or if John Stewart’s uniform is updated with more green, the costume could be one of the most faithful adaptations of the Green Lantern we’ve seen.
Guy Gardner’s DCU Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion)

As a huge Green Lantern fan, I have to say I think Guy Gardner’s costume in DCU is the most comic-accurate live-action suit we’ve gotten so far. It really nails his look from the comics – especially that jacket/vest style – and perfectly captures his personality, which is amazing to see brought to life!
The biggest issue with the suit is its color scheme. In the 2025 film Superman, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern uniform is mostly white with green highlights, fitting the look of the Justice Gang. Despite this change, the iconic Green Lantern logo remains on the shoulders and belt buckle, just like in the comics. It’s simple to picture what an earlier version of the suit might have looked like, with green as the primary color and no Justice Gang branding.
It remains to be seen, but I’m optimistic that the costumes for Hal Jordan or John Stewart in the upcoming Lanterns series will eventually be even better than Guy Gardner’s Justice Gang uniform. As of right now, though, I think Guy Gardner has the most faithful and impactful Green Lantern look in live-action.
DC Studios’ Lanterns is set to premiere in August on HBO Max.
