The Shrek movies are one of the most popular and well-loved animated series ever made. The original Shrek film was a critical and commercial success in 2001, becoming one of the year’s highest-earning movies. Its popularity led to several sequels and spin-offs, making Shrek the second-highest-grossing animated franchise of all time. Now, you can watch all the Shrek movies on Hulu.
Starting April 1st, all four Shrek movies will be available to stream on Hulu. That means fans can soon enjoy Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After all in a row!
The story centers around Shrek, an ogre, and his funny companion, Donkey, as they embark on a journey to rescue a princess. The Shrek movies boast a fantastic cast, featuring the voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad, and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.
The Shrek Franchise Continues to Expand
Following the popular Shrek movies, a spin-off featuring Puss in Boots was released just a year after Shrek Forever After. The film did very well in theaters and even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, leading to the creation of the TV show The Adventures of Puss in Boots.
The popular movie Puss in Boots got a successful sequel in 2022, earning critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. Given the franchise’s success, it’s not surprising that the world of Shrek is continuing to grow with new spin-offs.
Donkey, the beloved character from Shrek, is getting his own movie, scheduled to come out in 2028. Voice recording was planned to begin in September 2025. Following the success of Puss in Boots, fans are excited and hopeful for Donkey’s spin-off film.
The Shrek Film Series Is Also Set to Release a New Sequel
The Shrek movies concluded with Shrek Forever After in 2010. However, after over 15 years, a fifth Shrek film is in the works. Discussions about a fifth movie actually began as early as 2004, shortly after Shrek 2 came out.
When Jeffrey Katzenberg was running DreamWorks Animation, he shared that the plan was always to make five Shrek movies. However, as other Shrek films came out, a fifth movie seemed less probable, and many people thought the story had finished. Surprisingly, Shrek 5 was officially announced in 2024.
A fifth Shrek movie is officially happening! It’s scheduled to come out in December 2026, and the original voice actors are returning. Joining them will be new cast members Zendaya and Marcello Hernández. However, fans will have to wait a bit longer for this eagerly awaited sequel.
The Shrek movies are still incredibly popular, more than 20 years after the first one came out in 2001. While everyone eagerly awaits Shrek 5, fans in the US will soon be able to watch all the Shrek films on Hulu, starting April 1st.
