The Alien movies have had their ups and downs over the last 40 years, especially since the release of Aliens in 1986. However, a fascinating fan theory might explain some of the more controversial plot points. Starting with Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien has become a hugely successful and impactful series in film history, and it continues to be popular today, despite a few missteps along the way.
The first Alien movie was a huge success, scaring audiences with its terrifying alien creature. James Cameron then directed the popular sequel. Unfortunately, later Alien films haven’t been as well-received, with some even damaging the franchise’s reputation. However, a detailed fan theory offers a new way to understand these weaker installments, making them much more enjoyable to watch.
Few Alien Movies Have Been As Popular As Alien & Aliens
Both Alien and Aliens were popular with a broad audience – the first attracted fans of simple, scary sci-fi, while the second appealed to those who enjoyed action and adventure. However, most of the subsequent Alien movies haven’t reached the same level of success. Both original films have a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but none of the others score above 80%, and many suffer from problems that have damaged the overall reputation of the series.
Following the original Alien, the sequels Alien 3 (1992) and Alien: Resurrection (1997) – directed by David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet – continued the story, but often placed the character in unbelievable scenarios. These two films are generally considered the weakest in the series. Even Ridley Scott’s more recent Alien prequels, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), haven’t achieved broad popularity, despite being better-received than those earlier sequels.
Several films in the Alien franchise – Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant – introduced divisive plot points that significantly altered the series and disappointed many fans. This trend began with the unexpected deaths of beloved characters Hicks and Newt, and the deactivation of the android Bishop, all at the start of Alien 3. But a compelling fan theory offers a way to reinterpret these events, making them fit logically within the larger story.
Alien Theory Makes Some of the Franchise’s More Polarizing Installments Way Better
A popular fan theory, first shared on Reddit in 2018, proposes that everything happening in the Alien movies after Aliens might have been the shared nightmares of Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop as they traveled back to Earth in hypersleep. Ripley famously told Newt they would ‘dream all the way home,’ but considering the trauma they’d all experienced, those dreams likely weren’t pleasant ones – and could have actually been the events we see in later Alien films.
One interpretation of Alien 3 suggests the entire film is Ripley’s nightmare. It begins with her losing the crew she’d come to see as family, leaving her stranded on a harsh, unwelcoming planet with a group of indifferent men. She’s with Bishop, the android she trusts the least, and even encounters a human who resembles him. Throughout the film, she’s pushed to her limits, culminating in her deepest fear being realized: becoming impregnated by an alien. Considering all of this, the movie fits perfectly as a depiction of Ripley’s worst nightmare.
Like Hicks’s fears, Alien: Resurrection is filled with intense military action, a cold corporate mindset, and suggestive imagery – all echoing his experiences. The film mirrors the dangers faced by the crew of the Betty, just as in Resurrection. Ripley’s drastic plan to use nuclear weapons, while unusual for her, feels perfectly in line with the tactical thinking Hicks would have brought to the situation.
If this idea is correct, it explains a lot about the character of David (played by Michael Fassbender), a very early android and ancestor of Bishop. In Prometheus, he’s the only functioning artificial person among a crew of fallible humans. David spends the movie trying to discover his own origins and the origins of those who built him. Interestingly, he’s shown to be the one who originally created the Xenomorph, mirroring how Bishop was damaged in Aliens.
This leads us to the character of Newt. In the 1986 film, she was the only person left alive after the human colony on LV-426 was attacked, forced to live in hiding from the Xenomorphs. Alien: Covenant echoes this scenario, showing unsuspecting colonists seeking a new planet, only to be hunted and witness the deaths of their loved ones, much like Newt experienced. While they initially escape and believe they’ve defeated the Xenomorph, their victory proves to be short-lived.
The Alien Franchise Is Finally Moving In the Right Direction
This idea offers a new way to look at Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. While it might seem like an easy fix to suggest those movies were just dreams, it actually fits the story. If true – and it’s important to note there’s no proof within the films themselves – it means Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop all likely made it safely to Earth, opening up possibilities for a future Alien movie to continue their story. Sigourney Weaver has hinted at returning to the series, but it’s currently unknown how that might happen.
The story could continue sometime in October 2025. Although Ellen Ripley died in Alien 3, her clone, Ripley 8, ended Alien: Resurrection with an unclear fate, leaving room for a continuation of her adventures. Ridley Scott had said he was finished with the Alien series, but he’s now open to returning for another prequel if he finds the right story, which could potentially bring him back to work with Sigourney Weaver.
It’s been fantastic to see the Alien franchise evolve recently with new movies and the TV series developed by Noah Hawley. The success of Alien: Romulus in 2024, and Fede Álvarez’s work on a follow-up, suggest the Alien universe could continue to grow for many years. Despite some past setbacks, the future of the franchise looks promising, and certain long-held ideas still seem relevant.
