As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m thrilled to hear that one of the all-time greatest franchises is moving to a new streaming home in April! Starting April 1st, most of the movies – including the original from 1979 directed by Ridley Scott – will be available on HBO Max. Basically, you’ll find almost the entire series there!
This streaming service will include all four Alien films: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Aliens: Resurrection. You’ll even be able to watch director’s cuts and special editions, including Alien: Director’s Cut, Aliens: Director’s Cut, Alien 3: The Assembly Cut, and Alien Resurrection: Special Edition.
I’m so excited! They’re not just adding the original Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, but also the extended cuts of both movies! That means even more of the action and story, which is awesome.
HBO Max isn’t adding any new titles in its April update, except for the film Alien: Romulus, which will be available starting April 3rd.
How To Watch the Alien Movies on HBO Max in Order
There’s a lot of Alien content available on HBO Max this April. But it’s easy to follow, because the films being added all center around the same character: Ellen Ripley, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver.
The story follows Ripley as she travels aboard the commercial spaceship Nostromo. While responding to a distress signal, the crew discovers a room filled with unusual eggs. One of these eggs opens, and the creature inside attacks a crew member, immediately putting everyone on board in grave danger.
The story resumes with Ripley awakening after being in stasis for 57 years, following the events of Alien. She learns that the company has established a colony on the planet where the original Xenomorph was found, but all communication with the colony has been lost. Ripley joins a team of space marines to investigate, and they uncover a horrifying situation.
Following directly after the events of Aliens, Alien 3 (released in 1992) shows that only Ripley and one alien creature survived. They both end up crashing on a prison colony, forcing Ripley to deal with dangerous inmates while also facing the renewed threat of the alien.
I was completely hooked by this movie! It came out in 1997 and was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It brings back Ripley, but not as you remember her – she’s a clone, and there’s something really unique and unsettling about how she’s different.
What About the Alien vs. Predator Movies?
These stories, drawing inspiration from both Alien and Predator, take place in a separate timeline from the main stories of those franchises. This makes them accessible, as you don’t need to be familiar with the existing lore.
The movie AVP: Alien vs. Predator, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, came out in 2004. It was planned as a continuation of the first two Predator films and a backstory to the Alien series, taking place chronologically between them. The plot centers around scientists who accidentally discover a Xenomorph hive in the Arctic, which Predators have been using as a hunting ground.
In 2007, the series concluded with AVPR: Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem. Directed by Greg and Colin Strause, the movie begins when a Predator spaceship crashes in Colorado, unleashing dangerous Xenomorphs and hybrid Predators upon the local community.
These Alien movies arrive on HBO Max on April 1.
