Ridley Scott’s film Prometheus, which received mixed reactions, is currently popular on streaming services. It’s now a top 10 movie on HBO Max in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, reaching number six in both Denmark and Sweden.
When Alien: Covenant came out, it sparked a lot of debate among fans. The film continues the story started in Prometheus, director Ridley Scott’s earlier Alien prequel, and delves deeper into the series’ themes. Even now, the dark and atmospheric sequel remains a controversial topic for those who love the Alien franchise.
Critics generally liked the film, giving it a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is just enough to be considered ‘fresh’ on the site. While reviewers praised the movie for providing a thrilling and intense experience in space, they felt it didn’t offer anything particularly new to the Alien franchise.
Viewers weren’t as enthusiastic about Alien: Covenant. The film currently has a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
When it first came out in theaters, Alien: Covenant made $238.5 million around the world, costing $97 million to produce. This makes it the third most profitable Alien movie, after Prometheus and the original Alien: Covenant. However, Prometheus cost much more to make ($125 million), and the first Alien film had a smaller budget of just $80 million.
Alien: Covenant Remains a Divisive Sequel 9 Years Later
In Alien: Covenant, the crew of the spaceship Covenant is traveling to a new planet when they stumble upon a seemingly perfect, unknown world. Deciding to investigate, they encounter a dangerous being with sinister intentions for humankind.
Ridley Scott directed Alien: Covenant, which was written by John Logan and Dante Harper. The movie features performances by Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, and Demián Bichir.
With Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, director Ridley Scott revisited the Alien universe after originally launching the franchise and then letting others—like James Cameron and David Fincher—handle the sequels. Scott always envisioned the films as the opening chapters of an Alien prequel trilogy, and he has a concept for a follow-up to Alien: Covenant, although it’s uncertain if it will ever be made.
According to Ridley Scott, Alien: Covenant sets up the most promising sequel because it ends with the surviving character in cryo-sleep and David, the dangerous android played by Michael Fassbender, possessing alien eggs and a ship full of colonists. He believes this provides a fantastic starting point for a new film.
Disney, now owning the Alien franchise, appears pleased with how their first new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, has performed. They also launched the first Alien TV series, Alien: Earth, which premiered in 2025.
Alien: Covenant is streaming on HBO Max.
