Andy Serkis is excited about The Batman: Part II, though it may still be a minute before he returns.
Andy Serkis, known for his roles in award-winning films and shows, played Alfred Pennyworth in the recent The Batman movie. Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and father figure, helping him fight crime in his early years, especially while tracking down the serial killer, The Riddler. Serkis will be back for The Batman 2, along with Robert Pattinson as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Barry Keoghan is also likely to return as The Joker, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed.
Andy Serkis recently spoke with ScreenRant about his new film, Animal Farm, and shared a quick update on The Batman: Part II. When asked about Robert Pattinson’s statement that filming might start in May, Serkis confirmed he’s currently occupied with directing his own project, a Lord of the Rings installment called The Hunt for Gollum. He said he won’t be able to join the Batman sequel’s production right away, but he will be filming it before the end of the year.
Regarding the relationship between Alfred and Bruce in the upcoming film, Andy Serkis was hesitant to reveal any specific details about how The Batman: Part II will continue their story. However, he hinted that the movie will be deeply emotional, and he spoke highly of the script written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin.
I can’t reveal much about the movie, but I’m thrilled to be revisiting this world and collaborating with Matt Reeves again – we’ve worked together often and are good friends. Rob and Matt had a fantastic working relationship, and the story really reflects Matt’s personal perspective on life. I can’t share any specifics, but their connection remains strong – it’s a close, sometimes challenging, but ultimately wonderful dynamic.
Andy Serkis’s delayed start on filming The Batman: Part II has led to some wondering if he’ll have a smaller part in the sequel. However, the first Batman film took a very long time – 14 months – to complete, mostly because COVID-19 restrictions and safety protocols caused significant delays.
If the upcoming movie starts filming in May and becomes as successful as the last one, production could still take six to seven months. This would allow Serkis to finish his work on The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled for release in December 2027, and still have ample time to prepare and perform as Alfred, with a substantial amount of footage already available.
In addition to the film’s production schedule, Andy Serkis has hinted that The Batman: Part II will be a very “emotional” movie. The first Batman film already explored strong emotions, like Bruce Wayne facing the possibility of losing someone he loves, and Selina Kyle confronting the man responsible for the deaths of people close to her.
Details about the next Batman movie’s plot have been scarce, but director Matt Reeves has hinted it will explore Gotham’s corruption even further, building on what Bruce exposed in the first film. There’s a possibility the sequel will delve into the past actions of Thomas and Martha Wayne, which could be particularly difficult for Bruce and his guardian, Alfred, if they discover secrets Alfred didn’t know.
Even with the recent developments, Andy Serkis’ statements should reassure fans that The Batman: Part II is still on track for its October 2027 release. Starting production without Serkis will give Matt Reeves and the team time to focus on the large-scale action sequences first, and then later concentrate on the character-driven scenes with Alfred and the rest of the cast.
