Alex Murdaugh, who is currently serving a life sentence in prison, has reacted to the Hulu miniseries, Murdaugh: Death in the Family. The show dramatizes the events surrounding the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, and is based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast created by Mandy Matney.
According to Columbia, South Carolina’s WLTX, Alex Murdaugh has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Netflix docuseries Murdaugh: Death in the Family through his lawyers, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin. They stated the show “totally mischaracterizes Alex’s relationships” with his family, relying on “sensationalized accounts” and inaccurate, dramatized depictions of events.
Alex Murdaugh is very upset with the recent Hulu series about him and his family. He believes the show contains many inaccuracies and misrepresents the truth about their lives, especially his relationships with his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, whom he loved deeply and was very proud of. He insists any suggestion to the contrary is false. He’s also concerned that the show’s creators and actors didn’t make any effort to understand the real people involved – no one from Hulu contacted him, his son Buster, or anyone connected to the family to get their side of the story or check the facts. The series seems to rely on exaggerated stories from people who didn’t actually know them. Viewers should be aware that this show is a dramatization and doesn’t accurately reflect the truth about Alex, his family, or the tragic events it portrays.
The Hulu series tells the story of what happened before Maggie and Paul were killed. Jason Clarke plays a key role as Alex, but Patricia Arquette as Maggie and Johnny Berchtold as Paul are equally important. The show focuses on the relationships between all three characters, with the actors from Murdaugh: Death in the Family bringing their portrayals from a podcast to the screen.
Alex Murdaugh’s trial began in January 2023, two years after his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were killed. He maintained his innocence but was given two life sentences on March 2, 2023, with no chance of release. Later, in May 2025, the court clerk overseeing the trial, Becky Hill, was accused of criminal misconduct and lying under oath, leading Murdaugh to request a new trial.
Look, the Murdaugh saga just won’t quit, will it? Even after Alex got life, everyone’s still fascinated. And Hulu’s new miniseries? It’s completely captured that attention. I was surprised to see it hit Number One on the platform the moment those first three episodes dropped on October 15th. It’s clearly resonated with viewers, and a lot of people are now getting their version of the story from this show.
Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers have released a statement arguing that the Netflix series Murdaugh: Death in the Family portrays him unfairly. They claim the show’s creators didn’t thoroughly investigate his family relationships and that the actors didn’t accurately represent the people involved.
Even though Alex Murdaugh has spoken out against the miniseries Murdaugh: Death in the Family, new episodes will continue to be released every Wednesday until the series concludes on November 19th. Similar to other true crime shows that have faced criticism from those involved in the cases, this Hulu series will remain available and finish airing all of its episodes, regardless of Murdaugh’s objections.
